Chapter 2 – The Man Three Tables Away

Chapter 2 – The Man Three Tables Away
The ballroom didn’t explode.
It collapsed inward.
Like every lie had suddenly lost the air keeping it alive.
Natalie’s fingers tightened around the microphone.
“That’s not possible,” she whispered.
But her voice didn’t carry anymore.
Only fear did.
Three tables away, a man in a navy suit slowly lowered his glass.
He didn’t look surprised.
He looked… trapped.
My mother’s eyes followed my pointing hand.
“No…” she said under her breath.
My father stood up halfway, then stopped as if his legs had forgotten how to move.
Eric didn’t speak.
He didn’t even blink.
That silence told me everything.
Grant stepped forward again, opening the red folder wider.
“The laboratory report confirms paternity beyond reasonable doubt.”
A pause.
Then, quieter:
“And it excludes Eric Carter completely.”
A wave of whispers turned into noise.
Natalie finally turned her head.
Slowly.
Like her body couldn’t accept what her mind was being forced to see.
The man three tables away stood up fully now.
His chair scraped against the floor.
And in that moment…
I saw it.
Recognition.
Natalie had known him.
All along.
“You told me you ended it,” she said weakly.
The man didn’t answer.
His wife stood beside him now.
Her hands shaking.
“You said it was over,” she repeated, louder this time.
The man tried to step back.
But there was nowhere to go.
Not anymore.
Grant placed another document on the table.
Phone records.
Hotel receipts.
Security timestamps.
Months of hidden meetings compressed into paper evidence.
Natalie’s knees weakened.
She grabbed the edge of the table to stay upright.
“I didn’t know…” she said.
But even she didn’t believe it.
I looked at her.
For the first time that night, my voice sharpened.
“You didn’t care.”
Silence returned.
May you like
Heavier this time.
Because it was final.
