PART 3: The Pattern Finally Revealed
Two police officers entered the restaurant less than ten minutes later.
The body-camera lights blinked as they approached.
"Who made the emergency call?"
"I did," Elena answered.
The officers separated everyone.
One spoke with Maya.
Another interviewed witnesses.
The manager handed over the surveillance footage without hesitation.
A young waitress hesitated before speaking.
Then she took a deep breath.
"This isn't the first time."
Everyone looked at her.
"They come here almost every month."
"He's yelled at her before."
"I've seen him grab her arm."
"I've seen her crying in the restroom."
"I wanted to say something..."
Her voice cracked.
"...but I didn't know if it would make things worse."
Another employee nodded.
"So have I."
Then an older gentleman from another table spoke quietly.
"My wife and I have watched him insult her during previous dinners."
"We should have said something sooner."
The officer wrote everything down.
He then turned to Maya.
"Ma'am..."
"Has your husband ever hurt you before tonight?"
The restaurant became completely silent.
Maya looked at David.
Then at Rebecca.
Finally...
She rolled up the sleeve of her blouse.
Dark yellow bruises covered her upper arm.
Several people gasped.
Rebecca immediately protested.
"She bruises easily!"
Maya slowly shook her head.
"No."
Her voice trembled.
"He does this whenever he's angry."
David opened his mouth.
May you like
The officer raised a hand.
"You have the right to remain silent."
