Chapter 9 — The Company They Tried to Take

Chapter 9 — The Company They Tried to Take
The lights went out.
For one second, I couldn't move.
Patricia stood somewhere in the darkness.
The gun was still in her hand.
Then a metallic click echoed through the room.
She was loading another round.
I dropped to the floor.
A gunshot tore through the darkness.
Glass exploded above me.
“Run!” Detective Harris shouted.
I crawled behind the old desk.
Another shot.
Then another.
Harris fired back.
Patricia disappeared through the doorway.
I heard footsteps.
Then silence.
I grabbed my phone.
Mason was still on the line.
“Mason!”
“Connor!”
“Where are you?”
“I don't know!”
“Where is Amy?”
“I told you—”
A man's voice interrupted him.
“Hang up.”
The line went dead.
I stood.
“Harris.”
He was breathing heavily.
“She's gone.”
“Who?”
“Patricia.”
I looked at the doorway.
“How?”
“There are tunnels beneath this building.”
I stared.
“Tunnels?”
“This wasn't just a construction site.”
He looked at the old blueprints.
“Your father built escape routes.”
“Why?”
“Because he knew someone would come for him.”
I suddenly understood.
The building wasn't abandoned.
It was designed to survive an attack.
My father had expected this.
Maybe he'd expected everything.
Samuel arrived twenty minutes later.
I told him everything.
He stared at me.
“Patricia impersonated your mother?”
“Yes.”
“Then where is Teresa?”
“I don't know.”
“And Mason?”
“Taken.”
“And Amy?”
“Taken.”
Samuel rubbed his forehead.
“This is getting worse.”
“It gets worse every hour.”
He looked at the blueprints.
“What is this?”
“The old company headquarters.”
He studied the layout.
“There's another entrance.”
“Where?”
“Under the east wing.”
We searched.
Behind a concrete wall was a hidden door.
Inside was a staircase leading underground.
We followed it.
At the bottom was a corridor.
And at the end…
a vault.
The door was open.
Inside were documents.
Thousands of them.
Corporate records.
Bank statements.
Contracts.
Share certificates.
And one file marked:
BRADLEY CONSTRUCTION HOLDINGS
I opened it.
My father's company.
The company I had spent fifteen years believing I built myself.
The first page made me stop.
Controlling shareholder: Connor Bradley Trust
I stared.
My father had owned everything.
Not my mother.
Not Patricia.
Not Evelyn.
Me.
From the day I was born.
Samuel read the documents.
“This changes everything.”
“How?”
“Your mother never owned this company.”
“She told me it was hers.”
“She was only the administrator.”
“And Patricia?”
“Trustee.”
I stared at the papers.
“Then how did they control it?”
“Because they forged the trust records.”
“For twenty years?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
Samuel pointed to a series of signatures.
“Your father's original documents were altered.”
“By Patricia.”
“Yes.”
I felt anger building.
“They stole my company.”
“Technically…”
Samuel paused.
“They stole your identity as its owner.”
I looked at the records.
The company was worth far more than I had imagined.
Not millions.
Billions.
My father had built a national construction empire.
Real estate.
Infrastructure.
Energy.
Transportation.
Everything.
And I had spent my life believing I was just a successful engineer.
The truth was humiliating.
I had been working inside my own empire without knowing it.
Then I found something worse.
A corporate resolution dated three days earlier.
Transfer of controlling interest.
I read the recipient.
Cross Meridian Capital.
Evelyn.
They weren't trying to steal my house.
They were trying to take my entire company.
The birthday party.
The forged deed.
The missing will.
The attacks on Amy.
Everything was part of the same plan.
If they could prove I had willingly transferred my assets, they could take control.
Samuel pointed to the signature.
“This is forged too.”
I stared.
“My signature.”
“Yes.”
“Who filed it?”
“Patricia.”
I felt sick.
“How soon?”
“The transfer becomes effective tomorrow morning.”
I looked at him.
“Then we have less than twelve hours.”
We returned to my office.
I called an emergency board meeting.
Only six directors answered.
The others were already aligned with Cross Meridian.
I joined the video call.
The chairman looked uncomfortable.
“Connor, this meeting is unnecessary.”
“Why?”
“Because the board has already approved the transfer.”
“Based on what?”
“The trust documents.”
“They're forged.”
He sighed.
“That's your allegation.”
I held up the original records.
“Then explain this.”
Silence.
The chairman's face changed.
One director spoke.
“Where did you get those?”
“My father.”
“That isn't possible.”
“Why?”
“Because those records were destroyed.”
I smiled.
“They weren't.”
I looked at Samuel.
“Play the recording.”
My father's voice filled the meeting.
“The controlling interest belongs to my son, Connor Bradley.”
The directors stared at the screen.
Then came the final sentence.
“No transfer is valid without his direct authorization.”
The chairman leaned back.
“Where did you get that?”
“From the original trust vault.”
One director stood.
“This meeting is over.”
“No.”
I looked directly into the camera.
“It isn't.”
I placed the original will on the desk.
“The company you are trying to transfer doesn't belong to Cross Meridian.”
I paused.
“It belongs to me.”
The meeting erupted.
Some directors accused me of fraud.
Others demanded proof.
One called the police.
Another threatened legal action.
Then Samuel sent everyone a certified copy of the trust.
Silence.
The bank had authenticated it.
The county had authenticated it.
The court archive had authenticated it.
The forged transfer was immediately suspended.
The chairman's face turned pale.
“We need to postpone.”
“No.”
“Connor—”
“You had twenty years.”
I looked at every director.
“You don't get another hour.”
I terminated the transfer.
Then I removed the chairman.
Two other directors resigned immediately.
The remaining directors voted.
Five to one.
I was officially reinstated as controlling owner.
The company was mine.
Legally.
Completely.
For the first time in twenty years, my father's empire belonged to his son.
But I didn't feel victorious.
Because Amy was still missing.
At midnight, I received a call.
Evelyn Cross.
I answered.
“Where is my wife?”
She laughed softly.
“You sound like your father.”
“Where is Amy?”
“She is alive.”
“I want proof.”
A photograph arrived.
Amy.
She was sitting beside Mason.
Both were alive.
But Mason was injured.
His face was bruised.
Amy's hands were tied.
Evelyn spoke again.
“You've taken back the company.”
“Yes.”
“You're very proud.”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because you still have my wife.”
Silence.
Then:
“Tomorrow morning, you will transfer the company to me.”
“No.”
“Then Amy dies.”
“You won't kill her.”
“You sound confident.”
“I know what you need.”
She laughed.
“Do you?”
“Yes.”
“You need my trust.”
“No.”
“You need my father's evidence.”
“No.”
“You need me.”
Silence.
I continued.
“You've spent twenty years trying to control my family.”
“Yes.”
“You need my signature because without it, you can't access the final account.”
She stopped laughing.
I had guessed.
And her silence confirmed it.
“What final account?” she asked.
“The one my father hid.”
“Where?”
“Safe.”
“What do you want?”
“My wife.”
“Bring the company.”
“No.”
“Then what?”
I smiled.
“You come to me.”
She hung up.
Samuel stared at me.
“Are you insane?”
“No.”
“You just challenged Evelyn Cross.”
“Yes.”
“She controls half the people in this city.”
“I know.”
“She has Amy.”
“I know.”
“And you want her to come here?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
I looked at the original will.
“Because my father left me something else.”
“What?”
I opened the final page.
There was a hidden clause.
A clause neither Patricia nor Evelyn knew existed.
If my son is threatened by the beneficiaries named above, control of all assets shall immediately transfer to the Bradley Foundation, under independent federal supervision.
Samuel stared.
“You can move the entire empire out of their reach.”
“Yes.”
“But if you activate this…”
“I lose personal control.”
“Your company becomes a foundation.”
“Yes.”
“You'd sacrifice billions.”
I looked at the photograph of Amy.
“I'd sacrifice everything.”
At 3:00 a.m., a new email arrived.
The sender was Mason.
The message contained a location.
Then one sentence:
Don't come alone.
A second file was attached.
A video.
I opened it.
Mason was sitting in a dark room.
He looked exhausted.
Behind him stood Patricia.
But there was someone else.
A woman.
Evelyn.
She stepped into the frame.
“Connor.”
I watched silently.
“You think you've won because you recovered the company.”
She smiled.
“You haven't.”
She turned toward Mason.
“Tell him.”
Mason looked into the camera.
“Connor…”
His voice shook.
“The company wasn't the real target.”
I frowned.
“What?”
Patricia stepped forward.
“The company is only the key.”
“To what?”
Evelyn smiled.
“To your father's final account.”
I felt my blood run cold.
Mason continued.
“Your father left a private account worth over eight hundred million dollars.”
I stared.
“Where?”
Mason looked terrified.
“He didn't leave it in a bank.”
“Then where?”
He swallowed.
“He left it inside the company.”
I stared at the screen.
Evelyn smiled.
“Find it.”
The video ended.
Samuel looked at me.
“Eight hundred million.”
I nodded.
“Then that's what they're really after.”
“No.”
I looked at the company records.
“It's not the money.”
“What is it?”
“The evidence.”
Samuel went silent.
I remembered my father's words.
Information is power.
The account wasn't just money.
It was a vault.
A digital archive.
Every transaction.
Every name.
Every secret.
Enough to destroy Evelyn.
Enough to expose Patricia.
Enough to reveal what really happened twenty years ago.
And if they were willing to kidnap Amy and Mason for it…
then I finally understood why my father had spent his entire life hiding it.
At dawn, I entered the company's executive vault.
I used my father's key.
The door opened.
Inside was a single computer.
No internet connection.
No network.
Just one screen.
It asked for a password.
I tried my father's birthday.
Wrong.
My birthday.
Wrong.
The date of his death.
Wrong.
Then I remembered his letter.
The person you will marry.
I typed:
AMY
The screen unlocked.
I froze.
There was a single folder.
TRUTH
Inside were hundreds of files.
I opened the first.
A photograph.
My father.
Evelyn.
Patricia.
Richard.
Teresa.
And one more person.
Amy's father.
I opened the next file.
Bank records.
Then police reports.
Then surveillance photographs.
Then one document that made my heart stop.
A birth certificate.
Amy Carter.
Father:
Daniel Cross.
Mother:
Unknown.
I stared.
Daniel Cross.
Evelyn's brother.
Not her husband.
Not her employee.
Her brother.
Amy was related to Evelyn.
But there was more.
The next file was a DNA report.
I opened it.
The result was unmistakable.
Connor Bradley and Amy Carter: biological relationship probability — 99.98%.
I couldn't breathe.
Samuel looked over my shoulder.
His face went white.
“What does that mean?”
I stared at the screen.
It meant Amy wasn't just connected to my father's death.
She was connected to me.
By blood.
And suddenly, the entire story changed.
The woman I loved.
The woman who had been fighting to uncover my father's murder.
The woman carrying our child.
Was hiding a secret that could destroy both of us.
I whispered:
“Amy…”
Then another file appeared automatically.
Its title was:
THE NIGHT YOUR FATHER CHANGED YOUR IDENTITY.
May you like
I clicked it.
And for the first time, I saw the truth about who I really was.
