PART 2 — The Missing Family

PART 2 — The Missing Family

By the third day, Leo finally started asking for water instead of pain meds.

That felt like hope.

He still couldn’t sit up without wincing, but his color was better. His grip on my fingers had returned. Every few hours he’d wake up just long enough to ask the same question in a different way.

“Did Grandma come?”

Each time, I gave him the same answer.

“She must be busy, sweetheart.”

And each time, I hated myself a little more for saying it.

Because I already knew she wasn’t busy.

She was posting.

I saw it at 2:14 a.m. on the third night—too tired to sleep, too wired to stop checking my phone.

A GoFundMe link.

Leo’s name in the title.

Help Leo Fight His Battle 💙

My mother’s profile photo sat at the top like a badge of honor.

The description made my stomach turn.

Our precious grandson is undergoing critical surgery. Any help is appreciated for medical expenses and family support during this difficult time.

Family support.

There were photos.

Old ones of Leo in his hospital bed from years ago—recycled, cropped, carefully chosen to look recent. A picture of my mother holding his hand. Chloe kissing his cheek. Even one of me, taken without permission at a Christmas dinner when I was mid-blink, captioned:

Strong single mother doing her best.

The total raised glowed beneath it.

$15,420.

My hand started shaking so hard I nearly dropped my phone.

Then I read the comments.

So proud of this family for staying strong 💕
Sending prayers and donations!
Chloe deserves the best wedding after all she’s done for her nephew!

My sister had commented.

Thank you everyone!! This means so much for my special day 💍✨

My vision narrowed.

The blood donation paperwork.

The missed calls.

Leo lying in a hospital bed asking for people who were “too busy.”

And my sister talking about a wedding.

I didn’t scream.

I didn’t call.

I didn’t even cry.

I just sat there in the dark hospital room until the machines beside Leo beeped steadily enough to keep me grounded.

Then I opened my banking app.
