PART 4 — The Cost of Silence

PART 4 — The Cost of Silence

At 7:18 a.m., my mother finally texted.

Why are our accounts frozen?? CALL ME NOW.

Chloe followed immediately.

WHAT DID YOU DO?? THIS IS MY WEDDING WEEK

Not one word about Leo.

Not one question.

Not even a fake apology.

I turned my phone face down.

Leo stirred.

“Mom?”

I leaned in immediately.

“I’m here.”

His eyes cracked open.

“Did Grandma forget me?”

My throat tightened so hard it hurt to speak.

I chose honesty.

“Yes,” I said softly.

A long pause.

Then he nodded once, like he’d already suspected the answer and just needed it confirmed.

“Okay,” he whispered.

Then he reached for my hand again.

“That’s okay. I still have you.”

That was the moment I stopped shaking.

Not because everything was fixed.

But because everything finally made sense.

Outside, the hospital corridor buzzed with morning rounds.

Somewhere in the city, my mother was trying to explain why stolen compassion doesn’t hold up under scrutiny.

Somewhere else, my sister was probably calling her wedding planner.

And in my son’s hospital room, nothing else mattered except the steady sound of his heart monitor and the fact that he was still here.

Still mine.

Still alive.

And for the first time in days…

May you like

I believed we were going to survive what came next.
