CHAPTER 2: THE HOUSE THAT WAS NEVER THEIRS

CHAPTER 2: THE HOUSE THAT WAS NEVER THEIRS
“I think you misunderstand something,” I said gently.
My husband sighed.
“Here we go.”
His sister rolled her eyes.
“Another speech?”
I stepped away from the counter.
One step.
Then another.
The kitchen suddenly felt smaller.
Not because the room changed.
Because perception did.
“You think this estate belongs to your family,” I said.
My mother-in-law finally looked at me.
Sharp.
Dismissive.
“Of course it does.”
I nodded.
“Interesting.”
My husband crossed his arms.
“Say whatever you want. You’re still my wife.”
The word wife landed like a claim of ownership.
Not partnership.
Possession.
I tilted my head slightly.
“Do you know what Vale Meridian Holdings is?”
That name changed the temperature in the room.
Not visibly.
But I felt it.
A subtle shift.
My father-in-law’s newspaper paused mid-air.
Just for a second.
Then continued.
My husband frowned.
“No. Why would I?”
I nodded again.
“That’s your first mistake.”
His sister scoffed.
“Is this supposed to scare us?”
I didn’t answer her.
I looked past them.
Through them.
At the house.
At the cameras.
At the systems embedded in every wall.
Then I said it clearly.
“Because Vale Meridian Holdings owns this property.”
A pause.
Then laughter.
My husband actually laughed.
“You’re insane.”
His mother smiled coldly.
“Sweetheart, if you’re going to lie, at least make it believable.”
I reached into my pocket.
Placed a small black card on the counter.
No logo.
No decoration.
Just a name engraved in minimal silver lettering:
EVELYN SHAW
The laughter stopped.
Not immediately.
But noticeably.
Like a sound being turned down.
My husband stared at it.
“What is this?”
May you like
I answered calmly.
“My real name.”
