The following morning, Katherine agreed to speak with Grace and Robert.
Her hands still trembled as she held a cup of tea.
"I never wanted to hurt anyone," she said softly.
She explained that Beatrice had been her mentor at work.
When Beatrice ended her engagement, Katherine had simply supported her friend's decision without ever interfering.
"I didn't even know Caleb believed I was responsible," Katherine said.
Grace listened in silence.
Years of believing she knew her son collapsed around her.
She turned to Caleb.
"Did you ever ask Katherine what really happened?"
He couldn't answer.
Because he never had.
Instead, he had built an entire marriage on an imagined betrayal.
Grace stood.
"Our family raised you to solve problems with honesty."
