Within days, Katherine made the difficult decision to end the marriage before it had truly begun.
Caleb did not fight her.
He knew he had destroyed the trust before their life together had even started.
Months later, he began counseling to confront the anger and obsession he had allowed to define him.
Grace stayed in contact with Katherine.
Not because of obligation.
Because she still considered her family.
One afternoon, they met for coffee.
"I've always wanted to ask you something," Katherine said.
Grace smiled sadly.
"What is it?"
"Were you disappointed that I left?"
Grace reached across the table and gently squeezed her hand.
"No."
"I was heartbroken that you ever needed to."
Katherine's eyes filled with tears.
Grace continued.
"Marriage should never be built on punishment."
"It should be built on respect."
As they embraced outside the café, Grace realized that being a mother sometimes meant loving your child enough to hold them accountable.
