CHAPTER 4: THE PRICE OF A FATHER'S BETRAYAL

CHAPTER 4: THE PRICE OF A FATHER'S BETRAYAL

One week later...

Garrett walked confidently into the boardroom.

He expected another quarterly meeting.

Instead, every director was already seated.

At the head of the table sat Richard Bennett.

Beside him sat Meredith.

She wore black.

Not for appearance.

For mourning.

Garrett frowned.

"What is this?"

Richard slid a folder across the polished table.

"Open it."

Inside were photographs.

Hotel records.

Phone logs.

Security footage stills.

And a timeline.

8:51 p.m.—Lucas suffered cardiac arrest.

9:04 p.m.—Garrett declined Meredith's call.

9:05 p.m.—He embraced Vanessa Cole.

9:17 p.m.—He ordered champagne.

11:47 p.m.—Lucas was pronounced dead.

2:17 a.m.—Garrett arrived at the hospital.

The room was silent.

Garrett's face drained of color.

"I..."

"There is no explanation," Meredith said quietly.

"There is only the truth."

Richard stood.

"For six years, I trusted you with my daughter's heart."

"You failed."

"I trusted you with my grandson."

"You abandoned him."

Then he handed Garrett one final envelope.

Divorce papers.

Termination of his executive position.

And notice that every share Richard controlled in the family company had been voted against Garrett's continued employment.

"You won't lose everything because you had an affair," Richard said.

"You'll lose everything because, when your son took his final breath..."

"You chose someone else."

Garrett lowered his head.

For the first time in his life...

There was no excuse left to hide behind.

Months later, Meredith opened the Lucas Bennett Children's Cardiac Foundation, using part of the settlement to help families who could not afford lifesaving treatment.

Above the entrance hung a simple bronze plaque.

"Love is not measured by the promises we make.
It is measured by where we choose to be when the people we love need us most."

And every time Meredith walked through those doors, she remembered her little boy—not for the night she lost him...

But for the five beautiful years he had taught her what unconditional love truly meant.
