Chapter 5 – The Security Footage

Chapter 5 – The Security Footage

The small key from her grandmother's wooden box sat on Lily's desk all night.

She barely slept.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the same things.

Victoria Whitmore's cold expression.

Daniel Valentine's warning.

Her grandmother's final message.

"When they come for the necklace, they will come for the truth too."

By morning, Lily had made a decision.

She was done being afraid.

For years, she had accepted that some questions had no answers.

She had accepted that adults kept secrets.

She had accepted that powerful people lived in a world she would never understand.

But now those secrets had entered her life.

They had followed her into a jewelry store.

They had destroyed her reputation.

And they had involved the one person she trusted most.

Her grandmother.

Lily returned to Valentine & Crown.

This time, she did not enter nervously.

She walked through the doors with purpose.

Emma noticed immediately.

"You found something."

Lily looked at her.

"How did you know?"

Emma smiled slightly.

"Because yesterday you looked like someone trying to survive."

"Today you look like someone trying to find answers."

Before Lily could respond, Mr. Harrison appeared.

"I was hoping you would come."

He looked serious.

"We need to talk."

"About Victoria?"

He nodded.

"About what the security footage revealed."

They entered the private security room.

The walls were covered with monitors.

Dozens of camera angles showed every corner of the store.

Mr. Harrison closed the door.

"What I'm about to show you..."

"Very few people have seen."

Lily sat down.

"Why?"

"Because it changes everything."

The footage from the previous day appeared on the screen.

The store was crowded.

Customers moved between displays.

Employees assisted buyers.

Then Lily entered.

The video showed her walking toward the necklace.

She looked at it.

Nothing more.

She never touched the case.

Never reached toward the lock.

Never stepped close enough to open it.

Mr. Harrison paused the video.

"You see?"

Lily nodded.

"I didn't do anything."

"I know."

He continued playing.

The footage moved forward.

Victoria entered the frame.

She looked elegant.

Confident.

The same woman everyone trusted.

She walked directly toward the Evelyn Diamond Necklace.

She stood there for almost a minute.

Then something happened.

Something nobody had noticed before.

Victoria looked around.

Not casually.

Carefully.

As if checking whether someone was watching.

Then she reached into her purse.

Lily leaned closer.

"What is she doing?"

Mr. Harrison didn't answer.

The footage zoomed in.

Victoria removed a small device.

A tiny electronic scanner.

Lily frowned.

"What is that?"

"We don't know yet."

"She was trying to open the case?"

"No."

Mr. Harrison paused.

"She was trying to read something."

The video continued.

Victoria placed the device near the display.

A small light flashed.

Then she immediately pulled it away.

A few seconds later...

The case alarm briefly activated.

Only for a moment.

Then stopped.

Lily looked confused.

"Why didn't anyone notice?"

"Because the alarm system reset itself."

"She knew that?"

Mr. Harrison nodded.

"Whoever she was working with knew our security system."

The video continued.

Then came the moment that changed everything.

Lily entered the store.

She stood near the necklace.

Victoria saw her.

And her entire expression changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

Fear.

"She knew me."

Lily whispered.

Mr. Harrison nodded.

"Yes."

"But why?"

The footage showed Victoria watching Lily carefully.

Then Victoria walked toward the display.

Not to steal the necklace.

Not to protect it.

To create a scene.

"She waited for me to come near."

"Yes."

"She planned the accusation."

"Yes."

Lily stared at the screen.

The anger inside her grew.

Not because Victoria disliked her.

Because Victoria had used her as a distraction.

A tool.

A person she believed nobody would defend.

Then the video reached the moment everyone remembered.

Victoria accusing Lily.

Security arriving.

The case being opened.

The necklace still inside.

But Mr. Harrison stopped the footage before the ending.

"Watch this."

He rewound.

Then slowed the video.

A few seconds before Victoria accused Lily...

A man appeared in the background.

Walking behind the customers.

Lily looked carefully.

"Who is that?"

Mr. Harrison's face changed.

"I don't know."

The man was wearing a dark coat and a hat.

His face was partially hidden.

But he stood close enough to hear Victoria.

Close enough to observe Lily.

The footage showed something strange.

Victoria glanced toward the man.

Only for a second.

But it was enough.

They were communicating.

Without words.

"They know each other."

"Yes."

"Then why didn't you show this to the police?"

Mr. Harrison hesitated.

"Because I needed to confirm something first."

"What?"

He looked at her.

"Whether the man was connected to the past."

Lily's heart raced.

"The past?"

Mr. Harrison nodded.

"Look at his hand."

The footage zoomed in.

The man's hand moved from his pocket.

On his finger...

Was a ring.

An old family symbol.

Lily recognized it immediately.

Because she had seen it before.

On the documents inside her grandmother's box.

The Valentine family crest.

"Another Valentine?"

Mr. Harrison shook his head.

"No."

"Then who?"

He enlarged the image.

The ring had a small engraving.

A symbol only old members of the Valentine family knew.

Mr. Harrison whispered:

"That ring belonged to Clara Valentine."

Lily stood suddenly.

"What?"

"Impossible."

"Clara disappeared decades ago."

"I know."

"Then how could someone be wearing her ring?"

Neither of them had an answer.

But the implication was terrifying.

If Clara Valentine's ring was still in circulation...

Then maybe the story everyone believed was false.

Maybe Clara had not disappeared.

Maybe someone wanted people to believe she had.

Before Lily could ask more, Emma rushed into the room.

Her face was pale.

"Mr. Harrison."

"What happened?"

"There is someone outside asking for Lily."

"Who?"

Emma swallowed.

"Victoria Whitmore."

Lily looked toward the door.

"What does she want?"

Emma hesitated.

"She says she wants to apologize."

Mr. Harrison immediately shook his head.

"No."

Lily looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because Victoria Whitmore does not apologize unless she needs something."

They walked toward the entrance.

Victoria stood outside.

No cameras.

No reporters.

No audience.

Just her.

For the first time, she looked different.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Desperate.

"Lily."

The teenager stared at her.

"What do you want?"

Victoria took a slow breath.

"I made a mistake."

Lily almost laughed.

"A mistake?"

"You accused me of stealing."

"I was wrong."

"You tried to ruin my life."

Victoria's expression hardened slightly.

"I said I was wrong."

Lily noticed something.

Victoria wasn't sorry.

She was afraid.

"What are you afraid of?"

For a moment...

Victoria said nothing.

Then she looked directly at Lily.

"The necklace."

Lily frowned.

"The necklace was never stolen."

"I know."

"Then why?"

Victoria lowered her voice.

"Because you don't understand what that necklace contains."

The words sent a chill through Lily.

"What does it contain?"

Victoria looked around.

Then whispered:

"The truth about what happened to Clara Valentine."

Before Lily could respond, Victoria stepped closer.

"You think your grandmother was protecting that necklace."

"She wasn't."

"She was protecting you."

Lily froze.

"My grandmother?"

Victoria looked at her with an expression Lily had never seen before.

Not anger.

Not arrogance.

Fear.

"Your grandmother knew who destroyed the Valentine family."

"She knew who made Clara disappear."

"And she knew..."

Victoria paused.

"...that one day they would come looking for you."

Then Victoria quickly walked away.

Leaving Lily standing there.

More confused than ever.

Because the woman who had humiliated her yesterday...

Had just given her a warning.

And for the first time...

Lily wondered if Victoria Whitmore was not only the enemy.

May you like

Maybe she was also afraid of one.
