Chapter 8 – The Woman Who Wanted Power

Chapter 8 – The Woman Who Wanted Power

Victoria Whitmore had spent her entire life learning one important lesson:

People did not respect kindness.

They respected power.

That was why she never allowed anyone to see weakness.

Not when she was a child.

Not when she lost her family name.

Not when she rebuilt herself.

And especially not now.

Inside her mansion, Victoria stood in front of a wall covered with photographs.

Charity events.

Magazine covers.

Awards.

Influential people shaking her hand.

For years, the world had seen her as a symbol of elegance and generosity.

The perfect woman.

The woman who donated millions.

The woman who supported struggling families.

The woman everyone admired.

But behind the photographs was another story.

A story nobody knew.

A story that began with a little girl who watched her family lose everything.

Victoria Valentine was twelve years old when she first understood what power meant.

Her family had everything.

Money.

Status.

A famous name.

But she watched Clara Valentine receive something she never had.

Respect.

People loved Clara.

Employees listened to her.

Customers trusted her.

Even strangers admired her.

Victoria remembered standing in the corner during family gatherings, watching everyone surround Clara.

"Clara will change the company."

"Clara is the future."

"Clara understands people."

Nobody said those things about Victoria.

Nobody saw her.

Nobody cared what she wanted.

That was the moment something inside her changed.

She stopped wanting to be loved.

She wanted to be impossible to ignore.

Years later, when Clara disappeared, Victoria saw an opportunity.

The company was unstable.

The family was divided.

And everyone was looking for someone strong enough to take control.

She believed that person should be her.

But there was one problem.

Evelyn Anderson.

Evelyn had always been different.

She never cared about wealth.

She never cared about titles.

She cared about people.

And that made Victoria hate her.

Because Evelyn saw through her.

"You are becoming someone you won't recognize."

Victoria remembered Evelyn telling her.

"You think power will protect you."

"But it will only make you lonely."

Victoria had laughed.

"You say that because you have never had power."

Evelyn looked at her sadly.

"No."

"I say it because I have seen what happens when people lose their humanity trying to get it."

Victoria never forgot those words.

Not because they hurt.

Because she hated that they were true.

Present day...

Victoria sat across from Daniel Valentine inside her private office.

The atmosphere between them was tense.

"You should have handled Lily sooner."

Daniel's voice was cold.

Victoria looked at him.

"You think I don't know that?"

"You underestimated her."

"No."

Victoria's eyes narrowed.

"I underestimated Evelyn."

Daniel leaned back.

"The old woman is dead."

"But her mistakes are still alive."

Victoria looked toward the window.

"The girl is exactly like her."

"What do you mean?"

"She doesn't know when to stop."

Daniel smiled slightly.

"Then break her."

Victoria looked at him.

For a moment, she said nothing.

Because there was something Daniel didn't understand.

Victoria didn't want Lily destroyed because she hated her.

She wanted Lily destroyed because Lily reminded her of everything she had failed to become.

A person with nothing...

Who still had dignity.

A person with no influence...

Who still had courage.

A person everyone underestimated...

Who refused to disappear.

Meanwhile...

Lily arrived at the abandoned building outside the city.

The address from the anonymous message led her to an old warehouse.

The place looked forgotten.

Broken windows.

Rusting doors.

Dust covering everything.

She knew it was dangerous.

Every instinct told her to leave.

But then she noticed something.

A symbol carved into the wall.

The Valentine family crest.

Her heart started beating faster.

Someone had brought her here for a reason.

"Lily."

A voice came from the darkness.

She turned.

A woman stepped forward.

An older woman.

Her face was tired.

But familiar.

Lily stared.

"Who are you?"

The woman looked at her with tears in her eyes.

"My name is Sarah."

"Sarah what?"

She hesitated.

"Sarah Valentine."

Lily froze.

Another Valentine.

Another secret.

"How do you know me?"

Sarah looked at the necklace photograph in Lily's hand.

"Because I knew your grandmother."

Lily stepped back.

"Who are you?"

Sarah took a deep breath.

"I was Clara's closest friend."

The words shocked Lily.

"You knew Clara?"

"Yes."

"Then tell me what happened."

Sarah looked away.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she whispered:

"Clara didn't disappear."

The world seemed to stop.

"What?"

"She was forced to leave."

"By who?"

Sarah's eyes filled with fear.

"By someone who wanted everything she had."

Lily already knew the answer.

"Daniel?"

Sarah didn't respond.

But her silence was enough.

"Why didn't anyone tell the truth?"

"Because nobody wanted to die."

The words were simple.

But terrifying.

Sarah explained everything.

After Clara discovered financial crimes inside the company, she planned to expose the person responsible.

But before she could...

She was betrayed.

Someone close to her leaked information.

Someone she trusted.

"Your grandmother helped her escape."

"Escape?"

"Yes."

"Where did she go?"

Sarah looked at Lily.

"Somewhere nobody could find her."

Lily felt confused.

"If Clara survived..."

"Why didn't she return?"

Sarah looked heartbroken.

"Because she believed returning would put everyone she loved in danger."

A question immediately came to Lily's mind.

"Then why did my grandmother keep the necklace?"

Sarah looked at her.

"Because Clara hid the evidence inside it."

Lily remembered her grandmother's letter.

The necklace was not jewelry.

It was proof.

"What proof?"

Sarah lowered her voice.

"The proof that Daniel Valentine did not just steal the company."

"He destroyed a family."

Before Lily could ask more, a sound echoed outside.

Footsteps.

Someone was approaching.

Sarah's face changed.

"No."

"What?"

"They found us."

Lily looked toward the door.

"Who?"

Sarah grabbed her arm.

"We need to leave."

But it was too late.

The warehouse doors opened.

A group of men entered.

Behind them...

Victoria Whitmore.

Lily stared.

"Victoria."

The woman looked at her.

For once, she didn't smile.

"You really are Evelyn's granddaughter."

Lily stepped forward.

"Did you send the message?"

Victoria didn't answer.

Instead, she looked at Sarah.

"You should have stayed hidden."

Sarah looked at her with disappointment.

"I always wondered if you would become this person."

Victoria's expression changed.

"You don't understand."

"No."

Sarah shook her head.

"I understand perfectly."

"You wanted what Clara had."

"Not the company."

"Not the money."

"You wanted people to finally look at you."

The words struck Victoria.

For a moment, her perfect expression disappeared.

Lily saw something unexpected.

Pain.

Not just anger.

Pain.

But then it vanished.

Victoria returned to the woman everyone feared.

"Take them."

The men moved forward.

Lily stepped back.

She knew she was trapped.

But before anyone reached her...

A loud noise came from outside.

Police sirens.

Everyone froze.

Victoria turned.

"What?"

Sarah looked at Lily.

"You called them?"

Lily shook her head.

"No."

Then they heard a voice from the entrance.

"I did."

Everyone turned.

Mr. Harrison stood there.

With police officers behind him.

Victoria stared at him.

"You?"

Mr. Harrison looked at her coldly.

"Yes."

"You made the same mistake again."

"What mistake?"

He answered:

"You believed nobody would stand against you."

For the first time...

Victoria Whitmore looked afraid.

But as officers moved closer, she smiled.

A small, confident smile.

Because she knew something Lily didn't.

The truth about Clara Valentine was still incomplete.

And the final secret...

Was not hidden inside the necklace.

It was hidden inside someone who was still alive.

May you like

Someone who had been watching everything from the beginning.
