James opened the evidence folder.
Inside were military records.
Court documents.
Letters.
A notarized will.
And dozens of unopened envelopes addressed to Anna.
James laid them across the dining table.
"Michael Carter never abandoned his daughter."
Helen's breathing became uneven.
"He was declared missing during deployment."
"For three years."
"When he was finally located..."
"He discovered every letter he sent had disappeared."
The officer looked toward Helen.
"Were these letters kept in your possession?"
She couldn't answer.
James continued.
"Michael appointed temporary guardianship while he was overseas."
"Not permanent custody."
"He returned home eight months ago."
"And has spent every day searching for his daughter."
Anna stared in disbelief.
"My daddy..."
"Is alive?"
James smiled through tears.
