CHAPTER 4 — The Boots That Brought Her Home

CHAPTER 4 — The Boots That Brought Her Home

The front door slowly opened.

A man in military uniform stepped inside.

His face carried scars.

One arm rested in a sling.

But his eyes...

Anna recognized them immediately.

"Daddy?"

Michael dropped to his knees.

"My little girl."

Anna ran into his arms with all the strength her small body had left.

Neither of them spoke.

They simply held each other.

Around them, every guest remained silent.

Helen looked away.

Unable to watch.

The officer finally broke the silence.

"Helen Brooks..."

"You are under investigation for child abuse, unlawful confinement, and interference with legal guardianship."

She whispered,

"I raised her."

Michael stood, still holding Anna's hand.

"No."

"You controlled her."

"There's a difference."

Months later...

Helen was convicted on multiple charges.

Several guests who had witnessed repeated abuse admitted they had stayed silent because they "didn't want to interfere."

Their testimony helped expose years of mistreatment.

Anna moved into her father's home.

The first evening there, Michael placed a simple dinner on the table.

No crystal china.

No servants.

No fear.

He smiled.

"You don't have to earn your place here."

Anna looked around the small dining room.

"Can I break a plate?"

Michael laughed.

"I'd rather you didn't."

She giggled.

"But if you ever do..."

He reached across the table and squeezed her hand.

"We'll clean it up together."

That night, for the first time in years...

Anna slept with her bedroom door open.

May you like

Not because she was afraid.

But because she finally knew no one was going to lock it again.
