Chapter 8 — The Guardian

Chapter 8 — The Guardian

Victor did not sleep.

He sat alone in the darkened study, the projector still frozen on the last image.

His own name.

VICTOR BLACKWOOD.

The Architect.

It was impossible.

And yet, everything that had happened seemed to lead back to him.

The secret will.

The hidden vault.

Ethan's mysterious genetic marker.

His father's warnings.

Serena's betrayal.

The man on the phone.

And now the claim that Victor himself was somehow part of the machinery protecting the Blackwood inheritance.

At 4:18 a.m., Harris entered.

“Sir.”

Victor didn't turn.

“Where is Serena?”

“Gone.”

“Find her.”

“We're trying.”

Victor finally looked at him.

“No.”

Harris paused.

Victor stood.

“Don't find Serena.”

“Why?”

“Find the woman in the gray coat.”

Harris frowned.

“Elena?”

Victor nodded.

“She took Ethan.”

“You think she's responsible?”

Victor looked at the photograph on the desk.

“No.”

“Then what?”

“I think she's protecting him.”

Harris stared at him.

“From whom?”

Victor's eyes hardened.

“From us.”

The first clue appeared at 5:07.

A security analyst entered the room carrying a tablet.

“We found a vehicle.”

Victor turned.

“Where?”

“Thirty miles north.”

“What kind?”

“Black SUV.”

“License plate?”

“Fake.”

Victor took the tablet.

“Can we track it?”

“Not directly.”

“Then indirectly.”

The analyst hesitated.

“The vehicle crossed three toll checkpoints.”

“Which means?”

“It was recorded.”

“Show me.”

Three photographs appeared.

The SUV.

The first checkpoint.

The second.

The third.

Victor zoomed in.

The driver was barely visible.

But the passenger wasn't.

A woman with gray hair.

Victor stared.

“Elena.”

Harris looked at him.

“She wants us to find her.”

Victor nodded.

“That means it's a trap.”

“Then we shouldn't go.”

Victor looked toward the nursery.

“No.”

“We're going.”

At 6:30 a.m., Lily woke again.

Victor entered the room.

She immediately sat up.

“Did you find him?”

“Not yet.”

Her face fell.

Victor sat beside her.

“But we found a clue.”

“What kind?”

“Your description of the man was accurate.”

“The one with the scar?”

“Yes.”

Lily looked frightened.

“Who is he?”

“Alexander Blackwood.”

She stared.

“The man in the photograph?”

“Yes.”

“Is he dangerous?”

Victor thought about the phone call.

“I don't know.”

Lily looked at him.

“You don't believe he's the villain.”

Victor didn't answer.

She understood.

“You think he's protecting Ethan.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Victor looked away.

“Because everyone who has tried to hurt Ethan wanted me to believe Alexander was responsible.”

Lily was quiet.

Then she whispered:

“What if you're wrong?”

Victor looked at her.

“Then I bring my son home anyway.”

At 7:15 a.m., the convoy left the estate.

Two armored vehicles.

Six security personnel.

Victor in the lead car.

Harris beside him.

Lily in the second vehicle.

Victor had insisted she remain behind.

She had refused.

“I know what happened in that nursery.”

“You could be targeted.”

“So could you.”

“Lily.”

“I won't stay here while Ethan is out there.”

Victor studied her.

Then nodded.

“Stay beside the security team.”

“I will.”

The convoy disappeared into the morning fog.

The northern estate appeared after forty minutes.

It sat at the edge of a forest.

Old stone walls.

Broken iron gates.

A mansion that looked abandoned.

Victor stepped out of the vehicle.

Nothing moved.

Harris approached.

“No visible security.”

“That doesn't mean we're alone.”

Victor looked at the house.

“Search it.”

The team moved forward.

The front door opened.

Not locked.

Inside, the house was surprisingly clean.

Fresh flowers.

Warm lights.

A fire burning in the fireplace.

Victor stopped.

“This place isn't abandoned.”

“No,” Harris said.

“It's lived in.”

Then a voice came from upstairs.

“Victor.”

Victor froze.

He knew the voice.

Elena.

He looked up.

A woman slowly descended the staircase.

Gray hair.

Pale face.

Tired eyes.

She looked older than the woman in the photographs.

But it was her.

Victor couldn't move.

“Mom?”

She stopped.

Tears filled her eyes.

“Victor.”

He climbed the stairs.

She opened her arms.

For a moment, he was nineteen again.

A child.

A son.

A boy who had spent his entire life believing the woman he loved was dead.

He embraced her.

She held him tightly.

“I thought you were dead.”

“I know.”

“Why?”

“I couldn't come back.”

“Why?”

She looked at him.

“Because your father made me promise.”

Victor stepped back.

“My father lied to me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To keep you alive.”

Victor's voice broke.

“Then why did you take Ethan?”

Elena looked toward the hallway.

“He's not with me.”

Victor froze.

“What?”

“I never took him.”

“Then where is he?”

Elena's face changed.

“Victor…”

“What?”

“I came here because someone is coming for him.”

“Who?”

She whispered:

“The Guardian.”

Victor frowned.

“Who is the Guardian?”

Elena looked at him.

“You.”

The room went silent.

Victor stared at her.

“That makes no sense.”

“It will.”

“You said the Architect controls everything.”

“He does.”

“And I'm the Guardian?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because your father chose you.”

Victor shook his head.

“I never agreed to this.”

“You were a child.”

“What exactly am I guarding?”

Elena looked toward the basement.

“The inheritance.”

“The money?”

“No.”

“The company?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

She whispered:

“The Blackwood bloodline.”

Victor stared at her.

Elena continued.

“Your family has existed for generations because every generation produced one person capable of carrying the genetic key.”

Victor looked confused.

“Genetic key?”

“The ability to open the vault.”

“You said Ethan has it.”

“He does.”

“Then why me?”

“Because you are his Guardian.”

Victor's eyes narrowed.

“Why wasn't I told?”

“Because the Guardian must not know until the heir is threatened.”

Victor stared.

“That makes no sense.”

“It does when you understand the enemy.”

“Who is the enemy?”

Elena looked toward the window.

“The Architect.”

Victor's jaw tightened.

“Who is he?”

Elena hesitated.

Then said:

“Someone you trust.”

Victor froze.

“Who?”

She didn't answer.

“Mom.”

She looked at him.

“You're not ready.”

“I've had my son kidnapped.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Then you're ready.”

Elena led Victor into the basement.

The walls were covered in photographs.

Victor recognized himself as a child.

His father.

Elena.

Alexander.

And another man.

Victor stared.

“This is the Architect?”

Elena nodded.

Victor stepped closer.

The photograph showed four people standing together.

His father.

Alexander.

Elena.

And a younger man.

Victor's expression changed.

He knew him.

“That's…”

“Yes.”

Victor whispered:

“Richard Hale.”

His chief attorney.

His father's former legal adviser.

The man who had advised Victor since he inherited the company.

The man Victor trusted with everything.

Elena nodded.

“He was there from the beginning.”

Victor stared at the photograph.

“No.”

“He created the inheritance structure.”

“No.”

“He controlled your father's accounts.”

“No.”

“He helped hide your mother's disappearance.”

Victor turned toward her.

“You're saying Richard is the Architect?”

Elena looked at him.

“Yes.”

Victor felt sick.

Richard had been in his office that morning.

He knew about the will.

He knew about Ethan.

He knew about Lily.

He knew everything.

Victor's phone suddenly rang.

Richard.

Victor answered.

“Richard.”

His voice was calm.

“Victor. Where are you?”

“Why?”

“I need to speak with you.”

“About what?”

“The will.”

Victor's eyes narrowed.

“How did you know about the will?”

Silence.

Then Richard said:

“I was there when your father wrote it.”

Victor's heart stopped.

“You were there?”

“Yes.”

“Then you know about the vault.”

“I know everything.”

Victor looked at Elena.

She shook her head.

Don't trust him.

Victor said:

“Where is my son?”

Richard laughed quietly.

“You finally understand.”

“Where is Ethan?”

“Safe.”

“Give him back.”

“You still don't understand.”

“Then explain.”

Richard's voice became cold.

“Your father built the Blackwood empire to protect the bloodline.”

Victor said nothing.

“Your father failed.”

“Why?”

“Because he chose love over duty.”

Victor's eyes narrowed.

“You killed him.”

“No.”

Richard paused.

“Your father chose to die.”

Victor froze.

“Why?”

“To protect you.”

“From you?”

“From the Architect.”

Victor's heart pounded.

“You are the Architect.”

Richard laughed.

“No, Victor.”

Victor frowned.

“I am the Guardian.”

Silence.

Victor stared.

Richard continued:

“Your mother is lying to you.”

Elena stepped forward.

“Don't listen to him.”

Richard's voice became colder.

“Ask her why she disappeared.”

Victor looked at Elena.

She lowered her eyes.

Richard continued.

“Ask her who betrayed your father.”

Victor whispered:

“Mom?”

Elena didn't answer.

Victor felt something break inside him.

“Tell me.”

She began crying.

“I didn't betray him.”

Richard said:

“She did.”

Victor hung up.

He turned toward Elena.

“Tell me the truth.”

“I loved your father.”

“That isn't an answer.”

“I was trying to save you.”

“From what?”

She wiped her tears.

“From the truth.”

Suddenly, the lights went out.

Victor reached for his weapon.

A gunshot echoed upstairs.

Then another.

Security personnel shouted.

Victor pulled Elena behind him.

“Stay here.”

“No.”

“Mom.”

She grabbed his arm.

“They found us.”

“Who?”

“The men who took Ethan.”

Victor's eyes hardened.

“Where is Lily?”

“In the house.”

He ran upstairs.

Chaos had erupted.

Two security guards were down.

Harris was exchanging fire with men wearing black.

Victor searched desperately.

“Lily!”

No answer.

He ran toward the kitchen.

Empty.

Then he heard a cry.

“Victor!”

Lily.

He followed the voice.

She was trapped in a storage room.

A man was holding her.

Victor raised his weapon.

“Let her go.”

The man smiled.

“You're the Guardian.”

Victor froze.

The man continued:

“Finally.”

He shoved Lily aside and ran.

Victor chased him.

They reached the courtyard.

The man jumped into a waiting vehicle.

Victor fired at the tires.

The vehicle accelerated away.

Victor stood in the rain.

Harris ran toward him.

“Sir!”

“What?”

“They took something.”

Victor turned.

“What?”

Harris held up a small black case.

“This was in the basement.”

Victor opened it.

Inside was a key.

A strange metallic key shaped like a triangle.

Elena appeared behind him.

Her face went white.

“No.”

Victor looked at her.

“What?”

She whispered:

“They have the key.”

“What key?”

“The key to Ethan's inheritance.”

Victor's eyes hardened.

“Then we take it back.”

That night, they returned to the main estate.

Lily sat beside Ethan's empty crib.

Victor stood behind her.

Elena watched from the doorway.

No one spoke for several minutes.

Finally, Lily asked:

“Is she really your mother?”

Victor nodded.

“Yes.”

“And can we trust her?”

Victor looked at Elena.

“I don't know.”

Elena flinched.

“I understand.”

Victor walked toward her.

“Tell me everything.”

She looked at him.

“You won't like it.”

“I don't care.”

“You will hate me.”

“I already spent my life believing you were dead.”

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

“Then you have already suffered enough.”

“No.”

Victor's voice hardened.

“My son is still missing.”

Elena nodded.

“Then listen carefully.”

She sat.

“Twenty years ago, your father discovered that Richard Hale had created a secret network inside the company.”

“The Architect.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To control the inheritance.”

“Why Ethan?”

“Because Ethan is the final heir.”

Victor frowned.

“Final?”

Elena nodded.

“The bloodline ends with him.”

Victor stared.

“What does that mean?”

“If Ethan dies, the inheritance disappears.”

Victor's face went cold.

“Forever?”

“Yes.”

“Then why would anyone want him?”

“Because whoever controls Ethan controls the vault.”

Victor understood.

The money wasn't the real target.

The child was.

Ethan wasn't valuable because he was Victor's son.

He was valuable because he was the last key.

Elena continued.

“Your father knew Richard would come for him.”

“So he created the will.”

“Yes.”

“And made me the Guardian.”

“Yes.”

Victor looked at her.

“Why didn't he tell me?”

“Because if you knew, Richard would know.”

Victor nodded slowly.

“And now?”

“Now Richard knows.”

Victor's phone vibrated.

A message.

Unknown number.

He opened it.

A photograph appeared.

Ethan.

Alive.

Standing beside Richard.

Below it were four words.

THE GUARDIAN HAS FAILED.

Victor stared at the photograph.

Then another message arrived.

COME TO THE BLACKWOOD TOWER ALONE.

Victor looked at Elena.

She shook her head.

“Don't go.”

“I have to.”

“It's a trap.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

Victor looked toward the photograph of his son.

“Because he's counting on me being afraid.”

Elena grabbed his arm.

“Victor.”

He turned.

She whispered:

“If you go there, you may never come back.”

Victor gently removed her hand.

“I've spent my entire life letting other people decide what I should know.”

He looked at Lily.

“I'm done.”

Lily stood.

“I'm coming.”

“No.”

“You need someone you trust.”

Victor looked at her.

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then nodded.

“You stay with Harris.”

She frowned.

“Victor—”

“I need you alive.”

Lily understood.

“Bring him home.”

“I will.”

At 11:00 p.m., Victor left the estate.

He drove alone.

The Blackwood Tower waited in the distance.

Thirty floors of glass and steel.

The heart of the empire.

The place where Richard had worked for decades.

The place where Victor had trusted him.

Victor entered the private elevator.

The doors closed.

He pressed the top floor.

The elevator began to rise.

At floor twenty-five, the lights flickered.

At twenty-six, they went out.

At twenty-seven, the elevator stopped.

Victor looked up.

A voice came through the speaker.

“Welcome home, Guardian.”

Victor stared at the darkness.

Richard.

Victor's hand moved toward his weapon.

Then the elevator doors opened.

The top floor was completely empty.

Except for one chair.

And on it sat Ethan.

Alive.

Awake.

Victor's heart nearly stopped.

“Ethan.”

He ran forward.

But before he could reach his son, every light came on.

Richard stood behind him.

Not alone.

Three men surrounded Victor.

And beside Richard stood a woman.

Serena.

Victor stared at her.

“You.”

She smiled.

Richard stepped forward.

“You've been searching for the wrong enemy.”

Victor looked at Ethan.

“Let him go.”

Richard smiled.

“Of course.”

He stepped aside.

Victor moved toward his son.

Then Ethan suddenly spoke.

“Daddy.”

Victor froze.

His son's voice sounded frightened.

But there was something else.

A strange calmness.

Ethan looked directly at him.

Then whispered:

“Grandpa said you would come.”

Victor's blood ran cold.

“Grandpa?”

Richard smiled.

“No, Victor.”

He pointed toward the glass wall.

A man's silhouette appeared behind it.

Older.

Tall.

With the same eyes as Victor.

The figure stepped into the light.

Victor stopped breathing.

His father.

Charles Blackwood.

Alive.

The man on the phone.

The man everyone believed had died.

Charles looked at Victor.

Then at Ethan.

And finally smiled.

“My son.”

Victor couldn't move.

Charles walked closer.

“You've finally come home.”

And for the first time, Victor understood the terrible truth.

May you like

The Guardian wasn't supposed to protect Ethan from the Blackwood family.

He was supposed to protect the Blackwood family from Ethan.
