CHAPTER 2 – The Unexpected Witness

The slap echoed through the Grand Palmer Hotel.

Three hundred guests stood frozen.

Rebecca slowly turned her face back toward her mother.

The red mark on her cheek was unmistakable.

Yet she didn't cry.

She didn't shout.

She simply adjusted the microphone.

"So..."

"This is how far you're willing to go."

Caroline Bennett tried to snatch the microphone away.

"Don't listen to her!" she shouted. "She's always been jealous of her brother!"

Before Rebecca could answer, another voice rose from the back of the ballroom.

"I think we've heard enough from you."

The crowd parted.

Arthur Bennett walked slowly down the center aisle, supported by a polished walnut cane.

Every guest stared in disbelief.

Caroline's face turned white.

"Father... you weren't supposed to come."

Arthur smiled faintly.

"No."

"I wasn't supposed to witness my own daughter trying to steal from my granddaughter either."

Silence swept across the ballroom.

Nathan lowered his head.

Arthur climbed onto the stage without assistance.

His voice remained steady.

"Three years ago, I transferred the penthouse to Rebecca because she earned it."

"I made that decision while perfectly healthy."

"No one manipulated me."

He reached into his jacket and handed a sealed envelope to the master of ceremonies.

"My attorney instructed me to open this only if someone attempted to challenge Rebecca's ownership."

Inside were notarized documents, medical evaluations confirming Arthur's mental competence, and months of text messages from Caroline demanding that Rebecca surrender the property.

Gasps spread through the room.

One message appeared on the ballroom's large projection screen.

"If you don't sign the penthouse over to Nathan, I'll destroy your career."

Arthur looked at Caroline.

"You weren't trying to help your son."

May you like

"You were trying to control your daughter."

Caroline had no answer.
