Chapter 4 – The Man Who Believed Emily

Chapter 4 – The Man Who Believed Emily
Daniel Ashford had spent his entire life surrounded by people who wanted something from him.
People wanted his family's money.
His influence.
His name.
His approval.
Every handshake had a purpose.
Every compliment had a hidden meaning.
Every relationship came with conditions.
That was why Emily Carter confused him.
She never asked for anything.
Not once.
For three years, she worked inside his home and never tried to gain his attention.
She never flirted.
Never manipulated.
Never used her position.
She simply existed.
Quietly.
Honestly.
And somehow...
That made her the most trustworthy person he had ever known.
The Morning Everything Changed
Daniel stood in his father's old office, staring at the documents spread across the desk.
Emily Carter.
That name had appeared everywhere.
The old photograph.
The handwritten note.
The necklace.
A woman who had been invisible for years was suddenly connected to the foundation of the Ashford family.
But one thing bothered him.
Emily didn't know.
If she was part of some plan...
She was the worst actress he had ever seen.
Because the pain in her eyes after Vanessa accused her was real.
The humiliation.
The confusion.
The betrayal.
Nobody could fake that.
The Investigation Begins
Daniel called Thomas, the head of security.
"I need everything."
Thomas looked confused.
"Everything about what?"
"Emily Carter."
A pause.
"Mr. Ashford..."
"Find out where she came from."
Thomas hesitated.
"Are you sure?"
Daniel looked at him.
"Why wouldn't I be?"
Because Thomas knew something.
Something he was not saying.
The Housekeeper's File
Two hours later, Thomas returned.
The folder was thin.
Too thin.
Daniel noticed immediately.
"That's all?"
Thomas nodded.
"That's her employment record."
Daniel opened it.
Name.
Age.
Address.
Previous jobs.
Nothing unusual.
Too normal.
And that was the problem.
"Someone cleaned this."
Daniel said.
Thomas looked surprised.
"What?"
"Her file."
Daniel pointed.
"Three years of employment, and there is almost no personal information."
Thomas examined the documents.
Then his expression changed.
"You're right."
Someone had erased Emily's past.
Finding Emily
Daniel found Emily in the mansion garden.
She was repairing flowers damaged by the storm.
Not because anyone asked.
Because she noticed they were dying.
That was Emily.
She fixed things quietly.
"Emily."
She looked up.
"Daniel."
He sat beside her.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then he asked:
"Why did you never tell me about your mother?"
Emily froze.
"My mother?"
"Sarah Carter."
The garden suddenly felt colder.
Emily lowered her hands.
"How do you know her name?"
Daniel knew he had touched something painful.
"I found records."
Emily looked away.
"I don't remember much about her."
"Why?"
A long silence.
"Because she disappeared."
The Woman Who Vanished
Emily explained.
When she was young, her mother worked several jobs.
She was kind.
Quiet.
Always tired.
But one night...
Everything changed.
"I woke up and she wasn't there."
Emily's voice became softer.
"The police said she left."
Daniel frowned.
"Did you believe that?"
Emily shook her head.
"No."
"Why?"
"Because my mother would never leave me."
A tear formed in her eyes.
"She promised."
The Memory
Daniel listened carefully.
"Do you remember anything from that night?"
Emily closed her eyes.
At first, nothing.
Then...
A sound.
A voice.
A phrase.
"Your mother made a mistake."
Daniel became still.
"Who said that?"
Emily shook her head.
"I don't know."
"What else?"
She whispered:
"They said the Ashford family would never forgive her."
Daniel's Anger
For the first time in years...
Daniel felt something stronger than curiosity.
Anger.
Not the anger of a businessman.
The anger of someone realizing people had been hurt because of his family.
"My family did this."
Emily looked at him.
"I don't know."
"But they might have."
Daniel stood.
"I will find out."
Emily looked worried.
"Daniel."
He turned.
"You don't understand."
"Understand what?"
She looked at him.
"People like your family don't let secrets disappear."
A pause.
"They bury them."
Vanessa's Warning
That evening, Vanessa contacted Daniel again.
This time, she didn't pretend.
"You need to stop."
Daniel looked at the phone.
"Stop what?"
"Investigating Emily."
His expression hardened.
"Why?"
Silence.
Then Vanessa said:
"Because you have no idea who she is."
Daniel laughed coldly.
"That's interesting coming from you."
"Daniel, listen to me."
Her voice became desperate.
"Emily Carter is dangerous."
"She doesn't even know why."
Daniel froze.
"Explain."
But Vanessa hung up.
The Person Behind Everything
Daniel immediately called Thomas.
"Find Adrian Blackwood."
Thomas went silent.
"Why?"
"Because Vanessa is afraid of him."
Another pause.
"And I want to know why."
The First Proof
Later that night, Daniel received an email.
Unknown sender.
Attached:
A photograph.
A young Emily.
Standing outside the Ashford Mansion.
But the date was impossible.
Emily was only eight years old.
And behind her...
Was Thomas Ashford.
Daniel zoomed in.
His grandfather was holding Emily's hand.
Not threatening her.
Protecting her.
Then another image appeared.
A handwritten note.
"If anything happens to me, the girl must be protected."
Signed:
Thomas Ashford.
Daniel stared at the screen.
Because now he understood.
His grandfather had not feared Emily.
He had feared what would happen to her.
The Choice
The next morning, Daniel made a decision.
He walked into the mansion dining room where Vanessa was waiting.
"We need to talk."
Vanessa smiled.
"About Emily?"
"No."
A pause.
"About the person controlling you."
Her smile disappeared.
Daniel placed a file on the table.
"Adrian Blackwood."
For the first time...
Vanessa looked afraid.
Actually afraid.
And Daniel realized something.
Vanessa had not been the mastermind.
She was a soldier.
Someone else was moving the pieces.
And Emily Carter...
The maid nobody saw...
May you like
Was the one person who could expose the entire game.
