Chapter 7 – The Woman From Emily’s Past

Chapter 7 – The Woman From Emily’s Past

Emily Carter had spent twenty-five years believing she knew her own story.

A simple childhood.

A hardworking mother.

A tragic disappearance.

A life built around surviving.

But every answer Daniel uncovered created three more questions.

The necklace.

The Ashford archive.

The hidden documents.

And now...

The photograph.

A photograph showing her mother standing beside Adrian Blackwood.

The same man Vanessa feared.

The same man who had been secretly controlling the situation from the shadows.

For the first time in her life...

Emily wondered if everything she knew was a lie.

The Woman in the Photograph

Daniel placed the photograph on the table again.

Emily stared at it.

Her fingers traced the image of her mother.

Sarah Carter.

The woman who raised her alone.

The woman who sang to her when she was sick.

The woman who worked three jobs just to buy her a birthday cake.

Emily could never imagine her mother being connected to someone like Adrian.

"Maybe she was forced."

Daniel said quietly.

Emily looked up.

"You believe that?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

Daniel looked at the photograph.

"Because I know what my family was capable of."

That answer hurt.

But it also gave her comfort.

Because Daniel was not defending the Ashfords anymore.

He was searching for the truth.

The Woman Who Knocked

Three days later, someone arrived at the Ashford Mansion.

An elderly woman.

Carrying a worn leather bag.

She refused to give her name to security.

She only said one sentence:

"Tell Emily Carter that her mother's friend is here."

When Emily heard the message...

She froze.

"My mother's friend?"

She had never heard of anyone.

Not one person.

Her mother had always been alone.

At least...

That was what Emily believed.

Meeting Margaret

The woman's name was Margaret Ellis.

She was seventy-two years old.

Her hair was silver.

Her hands shook slightly.

But her eyes were sharp.

The kind of eyes that had seen too much.

Emily sat across from her in the library.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Margaret whispered:

"You look exactly like her."

Emily swallowed.

"Like my mother?"

Margaret nodded.

"The same eyes."

A pause.

"The same stubbornness."

Emily almost smiled.

Almost.

"Who are you?"

Margaret looked down.

"I was your mother's closest friend."

The Secret Friendship

Margaret explained.

She and Sarah worked together at Ashford Industries twenty-five years earlier.

They were not just coworkers.

They were investigators.

Sarah discovered financial problems inside the company.

Margaret helped her uncover the truth.

"What truth?"

Emily asked.

Margaret looked toward Daniel.

Then back at Emily.

"That the Ashford empire was built on a lie."

Sarah's Discovery

According to Margaret, Sarah discovered that millions of dollars had been stolen through hidden accounts.

The money was moved through fake companies.

The person responsible?

Victor Ashford.

Daniel's uncle.

But Victor was not acting alone.

Someone powerful protected him.

Someone who could erase evidence.

Someone who could make people disappear.

Adrian Blackwood

Emily whispered:

"Adrian."

Margaret nodded.

"Yes."

The room became silent.

"Your mother discovered that Adrian was helping Victor."

"Why?"

Margaret's expression darkened.

"Because Adrian wanted control of Ashford Industries."

The Night Sarah Disappeared

Emily finally asked the question she had avoided her entire life.

"What happened to my mother?"

Margaret looked away.

For a long moment...

She said nothing.

Then:

"She didn't leave you."

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

"I knew it."

Margaret nodded.

"She was trying to protect you."

The Last Conversation

Margaret remembered the night Sarah disappeared.

Sarah came to her apartment.

Terrified.

She carried a small box.

"Margaret, if anything happens to me, take care of Emily."

Margaret asked:

"Where are you going?"

Sarah answered:

"To fix what I started."

The Box

Emily looked confused.

"What box?"

Margaret opened her bag.

Inside was an old wooden box.

Emily immediately recognized it.

She had seen it before.

In her childhood.

Her mother kept it hidden.

"What is that?"

Margaret handed it to her.

"Your mother left this for you."

Emily's hands trembled.

"Why didn't you give it to me before?"

Margaret looked ashamed.

"Because I was afraid."

The Hidden Message

Inside the box were several items.

A letter.

A key.

A small recording device.

Emily opened the letter first.

The handwriting made her cry instantly.

Her mother's handwriting.

"My Emily,

"If you are reading this, it means I could not protect you myself."

Emily covered her mouth.

"I need you to know one thing."

"You were never abandoned."

Tears fell onto the paper.

"Everything I did was because I loved you."

The Recording

Daniel carefully examined the old device.

It still worked.

They pressed play.

Static.

Then Sarah's voice.

Weak.

Tired.

Afraid.

"If someone finds this..."

A pause.

"It means they know about Emily."

Daniel and Emily looked at each other.

"The Ashford family must never know the complete truth."

Emily's heart stopped.

Why?

Then Sarah continued.

"Because Emily is not only connected to the Ashfords."

A pause.

"She is the rightful heir."

Silence.

The Truth About Emily

Emily stared.

"No."

Daniel looked shocked.

The recording continued.

"Thomas Ashford promised me he would protect her."

"He knew the truth about her birth."

"Emily carries the bloodline of the original Ashford founder."

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Because the woman they thought was only a housekeeper...

Was connected to the family that built the empire.

Vanessa Learns the Truth

Across the city, Vanessa received a call.

"Margaret Ellis has returned."

Her face lost all color.

"No."

"She gave Emily the box."

Vanessa stood immediately.

"That's impossible."

The person on the phone said:

"Emily knows now."

Vanessa's hands shook.

Because this was the one thing Adrian feared.

The one thing she was ordered to prevent.

The Woman Who Was Invisible

That evening, Emily stood in front of the mansion's giant mirror.

For years, she saw only a housekeeper.

A woman who cleaned other people's lives while struggling with her own.

But now...

She saw something different.

Not wealth.

Not power.

A responsibility.

Daniel stood beside her.

"What are you going to do?"

Emily looked at the mansion.

The place where she had been ignored.

Humiliated.

Accused.

Then she answered:

"I'm going to find out why everyone was afraid of me."

And somewhere in the city...

Adrian Blackwood heard the news.

Emily Carter knew the truth.

The girl he thought had disappeared forever had finally awakened.

He picked up the phone.

"Begin the final phase."

A pause.

"And this time..."

May you like

"Do not underestimate her."
