Chapter 3 – The Choice That Changed Everything
By evening, the mansion was quiet again.
Police officers had completed their investigation.
The recovered Rolex was returned to its display case.
Emma's name was cleared.
As the officers prepared to leave, Victoria looked at Alexander with tears in her eyes.
"Please..."
"Don't destroy our family."
Alexander looked toward the staircase, where his two young children were watching silently.
Then he answered.
"Our family wasn't destroyed today."
"It was damaged the moment you chose cruelty over honesty."
In the weeks that followed, Victoria faced the legal consequences of filing a false accusation and planting evidence.
Alexander cooperated fully with the investigation.
He also made a difficult personal decision.
He filed for divorce.
Not out of revenge—
But because trust, once deliberately broken, could not simply be restored by pretending nothing had happened.
Emma planned to resign, believing the children deserved peace.
Instead, Alexander thanked her.
"You protected my children with patience and kindness."
"They're lucky to have had you in their lives."
Emma smiled.
"I just hope they grow up remembering one thing."
"What's that?"
"That the truth may take time to be heard..."
"...but it is always worth standing by."
Months later, Emma accepted a scholarship to study early childhood education.
The Hawthorne children visited her before she left.
The youngest hugged her tightly.
"You'll always be part of our family."
Emma smiled through tears.
Sometimes justice is not about humiliating the guilty.
