The ballroom fell silent.

The little girl clung to her father's hand, tears streaming down her cheeks.

The woman in the red backless gown rolled her eyes.

"She ruined the atmosphere," she scoffed.

The event's matriarch crossed her arms.

"Sir, perhaps it's best if you leave. This is a charity gala, not a daycare."

The father looked around the room.

No one defended his daughter.

Then his eyes stopped on the final auction item.

A faded, signed basketball jersey displayed inside a glass case.

He quietly raised his bidder's paddle.

"One million dollars."

Gasps erupted across the ballroom.

No one else even attempted to bid.

The gavel slammed.

"Sold."

The father walked to the stage, accepted the jersey, and held it in both hands.

Everyone expected him to pose for photographs.

Instead...

He turned toward his daughter.
