The courthouse plaza fell silent.
Attorneys dropped their briefcases.
A judge rushed down the marble steps.
Paramedics who had just arrived for an unrelated medical call sprinted toward the injured woman.
"She's eight months pregnant!" someone shouted.
Harrison Cole reached his sister seconds later.
Emily lay motionless on the white stone, one trembling hand protecting her stomach.
Blood stained the front of her pale blue dress.
"Emily."
His voice was calm.
Far calmer than anyone expected.
Her eyelids fluttered.
"Please..."
She struggled for breath.
"Save... my baby."
Then she lost consciousness.
Harrison removed his suit jacket and carefully covered her before the paramedics lifted her onto a stretcher.
Only after the ambulance doors closed did he slowly turn around.
At the top of the courthouse steps stood Vanessa Drake.
