CHAPTER 7 — ETHAN'S HIDDEN CONNECTION

CHAPTER 7 — ETHAN'S HIDDEN CONNECTION
For several seconds, Claire could not move.
Noah stood in the church doorway.
Rainwater dripped from his dark coat.
His face was older than the photograph.
Harder.
There was a thin scar above his left eyebrow and another disappearing beneath the collar of his shirt.
But his eyes—
those were unmistakable.
They were Claire's eyes.
The same dark brown.
The same small crease that appeared beneath the left eye when emotion became too difficult to hide.
Claire stared at him.
“You're Noah.”
He nodded.
“Yes.”
Her voice broke.
“My brother.”
Noah looked at her for a long moment.
Then he said quietly:
“My sister.”
Something inside Claire collapsed.
She took one step forward.
Noah immediately stepped backward.
Claire stopped.
He was afraid of her.
Or perhaps he simply didn't trust her.
She remembered what the woman had said.
Your brother believes you betrayed him.
Claire swallowed.
“I didn't know you existed.”
“I know.”
“I never chose the inheritance.”
“I know.”
“My father lied to you.”
Noah's jaw tightened.
“He lied to both of us.”
Behind them, Ethan remained frozen.
Claire looked at him.
“Ethan?”
He didn't answer.
His eyes were fixed on Noah.
Not with surprise.
With recognition.
Claire noticed.
“You know him.”
Ethan finally looked at her.
“No.”
Noah spoke.
“You do.”
Claire's stomach tightened.
Ethan's face had gone pale.
Noah stepped farther into the church.
“You know exactly who I am.”
Ethan shook his head.
“You're mistaken.”
Noah laughed bitterly.
“Still lying.”
Claire looked between them.
“What is happening?”
Neither answered.
Then Noah looked directly at Ethan.
“Tell her.”
Ethan remained silent.
Noah's voice hardened.
“Tell her what your father did.”
Claire's heart began pounding.
“Ethan?”
He closed his eyes.
Then whispered:
“My father wasn't only your father's attorney.”
Noah nodded.
“Keep going.”
Ethan looked at Claire.
“He was part of the Montrose security network.”
Claire frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“He was responsible for protecting the family.”
“And?”
Ethan swallowed.
“And he helped hide Noah.”
Claire stared.
“You knew my brother?”
Ethan nodded.
“I knew of him.”
Noah laughed.
“You knew me.”
Ethan looked at him.
“I was nineteen.”
“You were old enough.”
“I didn't know what was happening.”
“You knew I was being held.”
“I thought you were being protected.”
Noah's eyes hardened.
“That's what they told you.”
Claire stepped between them.
“Where?”
Noah looked at her.
“An underground facility beneath the Montrose estate.”
Claire felt sick.
“You were imprisoned?”
“Yes.”
“By my father?”
“Yes.”
“And Ethan's father?”
“Yes.”
Claire turned toward Ethan.
“You knew?”
Ethan shook his head.
“Not the whole truth.”
“But enough.”
“Yes.”
His voice cracked.
“Enough to hate myself for it.”
Noah walked toward the altar.
He stood beneath the old wooden cross.
For a moment, he looked like a man trying to decide whether he had the strength to reopen a wound that had never healed.
Then he spoke.
“When I was nine, I saw your father shoot someone.”
Claire froze.
“Who?”
Noah looked at her.
“Your grandfather's lawyer.”
Claire's blood ran cold.
“My grandfather's lawyer?”
“He discovered your father had been moving money out of the Montrose trust.”
Ethan frowned.
“How much?”
“Almost forty million.”
Claire stared.
“Forty million?”
Noah nodded.
“Your father was building a second identity.”
“What identity?”
“A company overseas.”
Claire understood.
“He was planning to disappear.”
“Yes.”
“And my mother found out.”
“Yes.”
“She confronted him.”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
Noah looked away.
“She tried to leave.”
Claire's voice trembled.
“And that's when the death certificate happened?”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“The death certificate came later.”
“Then what happened first?”
Noah looked toward the church entrance.
“Your mother discovered that you weren't the only child.”
Claire frowned.
“I was already born.”
“No.”
Noah's expression was strange.
“She discovered something else.”
“What?”
“That you had been adopted.”
Claire stopped breathing.
“What?”
Ethan looked at Noah.
“No.”
Noah turned.
“You didn't know?”
Claire stared at Ethan.
“Is that true?”
Ethan's face was white.
“No.”
Noah shook his head.
“Your father changed the records.”
Claire felt the room spinning.
“My mother gave birth to me.”
“Yes.”
“Then why would he say I was adopted?”
“Because he needed to erase the Montrose bloodline.”
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
“Why?”
Noah answered:
“Because if you were legally recognized as Laura's biological daughter, the trust belonged to you.”
Claire looked at Ethan.
“And he wanted the trust.”
“Yes.”
“So he forged my adoption records.”
“Yes.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Her entire childhood was beginning to unravel.
Every document.
Every identity.
Every official record.
A lie.
Ethan walked toward her.
“Claire.”
She stepped away.
“Don't.”
“I should have told you.”
“You should have known.”
“I didn't.”
“You said your father was just a lawyer.”
“I believed that.”
Noah laughed.
“Because that's what they wanted you to believe.”
Ethan looked at him.
“You don't know what happened to me.”
“I know enough.”
“No.”
Ethan's voice suddenly rose.
“I was nineteen when they took you.”
Noah went silent.
Ethan continued.
“I saw them bring you into the estate.”
Claire stared.
“You were there?”
“Yes.”
“You watched?”
“Yes.”
“And did nothing?”
Ethan's eyes filled with tears.
“I tried.”
Noah shook his head.
“You ran.”
“I was nineteen.”
“You ran.”
“They threatened my mother.”
Noah froze.
Claire looked at Ethan.
“What did they threaten?”
“My mother was sick.”
He swallowed.
“My father told me that if I interfered, he'd make sure she lost her medical treatment.”
Claire's anger faltered.
Ethan continued.
“I thought keeping quiet would keep you alive.”
Noah looked away.
“You were wrong.”
“I know.”
Ethan's voice broke.
“I've known for twenty-two years.”
Silence.
Then Noah whispered:
“You could have come back.”
“I tried.”
“When?”
“Three times.”
Noah turned.
“What?”
“The first time, they had moved you.”
“The second?”
“The second time, my father caught me.”
“And the third?”
Ethan looked at Claire.
“The third time…”
He paused.
“I found your mother.”
Claire's heart stopped.
“You found Laura?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Outside the old Montrose property.”
“Was she alive?”
“Yes.”
Claire stepped closer.
“What did she say?”
Ethan looked down.
“She told me to stay away from you.”
“Why?”
“She said someone inside the family was working for your father.”
Claire frowned.
“Who?”
Ethan hesitated.
“I never found out.”
Noah stared at him.
“You did.”
Ethan looked at him.
“You just didn't want to believe it.”
The woman with the silver pendant stepped forward.
“Enough.”
Everyone turned.
She looked at Noah.
“You shouldn't have come.”
Noah's expression hardened.
“I had to.”
“You were told to stay away.”
“She's my sister.”
“You don't know what bringing her into this will cost.”
Noah looked at Claire.
“She deserves the truth.”
The woman shook her head.
“The truth could kill her.”
Claire stepped forward.
“My whole life has already been destroyed by lies.”
The woman looked at her.
“Then you are prepared to hear what happened?”
“Yes.”
She sighed.
“Then listen carefully.”
She pointed toward Ethan.
“He was never simply your protector.”
Claire looked at Ethan.
“What does that mean?”
The woman answered:
“His father assigned him to watch you.”
Ethan nodded.
“Yes.”
Claire stared.
“Since when?”
“Since you were sixteen.”
Claire felt betrayed.
“You were assigned to watch me?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To protect you.”
“Or report on me?”
Ethan didn't answer.
Noah did.
“Both.”
Claire looked at Ethan.
“Is that true?”
Ethan finally said:
“Yes.”
The word cut deeper than any accusation.
Claire stepped backward.
“How long?”
“Six years.”
“You knew everything?”
“No.”
“But you reported to your father.”
“At first.”
“And then?”
“I stopped.”
“When?”
“The night I discovered what he had done to your mother.”
Claire's voice shook.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because your mother begged me not to.”
Claire stared.
“She told me that if you ever learned the truth too early, they'd use you against us.”
“Who?”
Ethan looked toward the silver-haired woman.
“She knows.”
The woman closed her eyes.
“I do.”
Claire turned to her.
“Tell me.”
The woman slowly removed the silver pendant from around her neck.
Inside it was a tiny photograph.
Laura.
Holding baby Claire.
And beside Laura—
a man.
Claire recognized him.
Her father.
But something was different.
He wasn't smiling.
He was standing beside another woman.
Claire looked closer.
Her breath caught.
The woman was Eleanor Hawthorne.
Claire stared at the photograph.
“Eleanor.”
“Yes.”
“When was this?”
“Two months before Laura disappeared.”
Claire's hands trembled.
“Why was my mother with her?”
The silver-haired woman answered:
“Because Eleanor was the one who warned Laura.”
“Warned her about what?”
“That Daniel planned to take you.”
Claire looked at Ethan.
“And she helped my mother?”
“Yes.”
“But Eleanor betrayed her later.”
“No.”
Claire frowned.
“What?”
“She didn't.”
“Then why did she lie?”
“Because she was trying to protect the person who betrayed Laura.”
Claire felt a chill.
“Who?”
The woman looked at Ethan.
Claire followed her gaze.
“No.”
Ethan shook his head.
“No.”
Noah stepped forward.
“You know the answer.”
Ethan's face tightened.
“My father?”
“No.”
The woman whispered:
“Someone closer.”
Claire's heart pounded.
“Who?”
The woman looked directly at her.
“Your mother trusted her completely.”
Claire's mind raced.
Maria.
Eleanor.
Ethan.
Her grandmother.
Who could it be?
Then the woman said:
“Someone who was beside Laura on the night she disappeared.”
Claire's blood ran cold.
“Maria?”
The woman didn't answer.
“Eleanor?”
Silence.
“Then who?”
The woman whispered:
“Your father wasn't the only one who knew where Laura was.”
A noise came from the church basement.
Everyone froze.
Noah turned.
“Did you hear that?”
Ethan nodded.
Claire stepped backward.
Another sound.
A metallic scrape.
Then footsteps.
Someone was coming up the stairs.
Noah moved in front of Claire.
Ethan reached for his phone.
The basement door opened.
Maria appeared.
Her face was terrified.
“Claire.”
Claire stared.
“Maria?”
Maria looked at Noah.
Then Ethan.
Then the woman with the silver pendant.
She whispered:
“You shouldn't have brought her here.”
Noah frowned.
“Why?”
Maria looked at Claire.
“Because they found us.”
Claire's heart raced.
“Who?”
Maria's eyes filled with tears.
“Your father.”
Ethan stepped forward.
“He's here?”
Maria nodded.
“He came to the mansion.”
Claire froze.
“When?”
Noah looked toward the door.
“Then why aren't we surrounded?”
Maria shook her head.
“Because he wasn't looking for you.”
Claire's stomach tightened.
“Who was he looking for?”
Maria looked at the silver-haired woman.
Her face collapsed.
“Her.”
The woman with the silver pendant stepped backward.
“No.”
Maria whispered:
“He knows you have the original letter.”
Claire turned.
“What letter?”
The woman looked at her.
“The letter your grandfather wrote before he died.”
Claire frowned.
“I already saw his will.”
“Not the will.”
She reached inside her coat.
She pulled out a sealed envelope.
“This.”
Claire stared.
“What does it say?”
The woman hesitated.
“It names the person who ordered Laura's disappearance.”
Claire's breath stopped.
“Who?”
The woman looked toward the church doors.
Then whispered:
“I never opened it.”
Claire frowned.
“Why?”
“Because your grandfather told me never to.”
“Why?”
“He said only Claire could open it.”
Everyone looked at Claire.
She stepped forward.
The woman handed her the envelope.
The seal bore the Montrose crest.
Claire's fingers trembled.
She broke it.
Inside was one sheet of paper.
She unfolded it.
The handwriting was unmistakably her grandfather's.
Only six words had been written.
THE PERSON YOU TRUST ISN'T HUMAN.
Claire stared.
“What?”
Ethan took the paper.
He read it.
His face changed.
“What does that mean?”
The silver-haired woman whispered:
“It means the final secret isn't about money.”
Claire looked at her.
“Then what is it about?”
Before the woman could answer—
the church windows shattered.
Everyone ducked.
A bullet struck the wall.
Noah pulled Claire to the floor.
Ethan dragged the silver-haired woman behind a pillar.
Another shot.
Then another.
Maria screamed.
Claire pressed herself against the stone floor.
“Who is shooting?”
Noah looked toward the broken window.
“Someone who doesn't want that letter opened.”
Ethan looked at Claire.
“Keep it.”
Claire clutched the letter against her chest.
Outside, a black vehicle sped away.
The shooting stopped.
Silence returned.
Noah slowly stood.
He looked at Claire.
“Now you understand.”
“What?”
“Why your mother disappeared.”
Claire looked at the letter.
“No.”
She shook her head.
“I understand something else.”
“What?”
She looked toward Ethan.
“You knew more than you told me.”
Ethan didn't deny it.
Claire's voice became cold.
“And I think you still do.”
Ethan stared at her.
“You're right.”
Claire's heart sank.
“What haven't you told me?”
Ethan looked at Noah.
Then at the silver-haired woman.
Finally, he looked directly at Claire.
“The night your mother disappeared…”
He took a breath.
“I was there.”
Claire froze.
“And I wasn't alone.”
“Who was with you?”
Ethan's eyes filled with regret.
“Your father.”
Claire felt the world go silent.
“But that's impossible.”
“No.”
Ethan shook his head.
“That's not the worst part.”
Claire stared at him.
“What is?”
Ethan whispered:
“Your father didn't disappear that night.”
“He was looking for your mother.”
Claire's heart pounded.
“Did he find her?”
Ethan closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
“And what happened?”
Ethan opened them again.
“He didn't hurt her.”
Claire exhaled.
“He helped her escape.”
Claire froze.
“What?”
Ethan continued:
“Because the man you believe was your father…”
He paused.
“…wasn't the man who signed your mother's death certificate.”
Claire stared.
“Then who was?”
Ethan's face turned pale.
“My father.”
Silence.
Noah whispered:
“Now you understand why I never trusted him.”
Claire looked at the letter in her hands.
The death certificate.
The hidden brother.
The missing mother.
The two fathers.
The woman with the silver pendant.
Everything was connected.
But one question remained.
If Ethan's father had forged Laura's death certificate—
why had Daniel, Claire's father, helped Laura escape?
And what secret could possibly be dangerous enough to make two enemies work together?
Claire looked down at the sealed letter again.
There was one final detail she hadn't noticed.
A second line was written beneath the six words.
She read it aloud.
“And when you discover what happened to Laura, you will understand why Ethan was chosen to find you.”
Claire slowly raised her eyes.
Everyone was staring at Ethan.
He looked devastated.
Claire whispered:
“Chosen for what?”
Ethan didn't answer.
Noah did.
“To lead you to your mother.”
Claire's heart stopped.
Then her phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
A woman's trembling voice came through.
“Claire?”
Claire froze.
She knew that voice.
Her entire body went numb.
“Mom?”
A long silence.
Then Laura whispered:
“Don't trust Ethan.”
The call ended.
Claire slowly lowered the phone.
Everyone looked at her.
Ethan's face had gone completely white.
And for the first time—
Claire wondered whether the person she had trusted most
had been protecting her…
May you like
or leading her exactly where someone wanted her to go.
