The Grand Regency Ballroom glittered beneath towering crystal chandeliers.
Business leaders, politicians, and celebrities gathered to celebrate the anniversary of the prestigious Lin Group.
Among the guests stood Ava Carter.
She wore a graceful crimson evening gown that flowed to the floor, carefully concealing the prosthetic leg she had relied on since a car accident years earlier.
Very few people knew.
She preferred it that way.
Her husband, Daniel Brooks, squeezed her hand.
"You look beautiful."
Ava smiled.
"Thank you."
Across the ballroom, Daniel's mother, Eleanor Brooks, watched with obvious disapproval.
She had never accepted Ava.
To Eleanor, family reputation meant everything.
A daughter-in-law, she believed, should represent perfection.
Tonight, she intended to prove that Ava did not.
As the guests gathered for photographs, Eleanor stepped onto the stage.
"I think everyone deserves to know who has truly married into our family."
Before anyone understood her intention, Eleanor bent down and yanked at the hidden fasteners beneath Ava's gown.
The prosthetic leg detached.
It struck the marble floor with a loud metallic clang.
Ava lost her balance and fell.
The ballroom gasped.
Some guests looked away.
Others stared in stunned silence.
Eleanor folded her arms.
"So this is the woman who calls herself worthy of my son."
"You hid this from everyone."
Ava's face flushed with humiliation.
She instinctively reached for the prosthetic, but Eleanor kicked it farther across the polished floor.
"Stand up," Eleanor mocked.
"If you're capable."
No one moved.
Then a deep voice echoed from the entrance.
"Enough."
Every head turned.
Chairman Richard Carter entered the ballroom surrounded by a discreet security team.
He walked directly toward the prosthetic leg lying on the marble floor.
Without a word, he bent down...
