Chapter 1 – The Contract No One Expected

Chapter 1 – The Contract No One Expected

The ballroom did not move.

Not a chair shifted.

Not a breath escaped.

All eyes were locked on the leather folder in the venue manager’s hands.

Clara Mason didn’t look surprised.

She didn’t look angry either.

She simply stood still as pieces of her torn wedding dress brushed the marble floor.

Patricia Whitlock’s hand slowly loosened its grip on the lace she had ripped.

“What… did you say?” she whispered.

The venue manager bowed again, deeper this time.

“Madam Clara Mason is the legal owner of Whitlock Grand Estate and all affiliated properties.”

A murmur exploded through the guests.

Andrew took a step back.

“That’s impossible,” he said. “She’s just—”

“Just what?” Clara interrupted softly.

Her voice carried across the hall without effort.

“Just the woman you thought you were doing a favor by marrying?”

Patricia turned sharply toward her son.

“Andrew, tell them this is nonsense!”

But Andrew didn’t speak.

He was staring at Clara as if he had never seen her before.

Clara finally looked at him.

Not with anger.

With disappointment that had been waiting for a long time.

“You never asked who I was,” she said.

“You only asked what I could give up.”

The venue manager opened the folder wider.

Inside were signatures.

Ownership transfers.

Property acquisition records.

And one final document stamped in bold:

SOLE OWNER – CLARA MASON

The guests began to whisper again.

But this time, the whispers were different.

Because now they were afraid.
