CHAPTER 2

CHAPTER 2

THE GIRL WITHOUT A NAME

The most dangerous mistake powerful people make is believing they know who they are hurting.

Victoria Harrington made that mistake.

She looked at Lily and saw a child with no influence.

No status.

No protection.

She saw someone small.

Someone easy to silence.

But Victoria never understood one thing.

The size of a person does not determine the strength behind them.

And Lily was never alone.

The ballroom remained frozen.

Hundreds of expensive shoes stood still on the marble floor.

Hundreds of wealthy guests stared at the giant screen.

And every single one of them had just watched the same thing.

No rumors.

No accusations.

No misunderstandings.

A woman everyone admired had revealed herself in front of the entire city.

Victoria Harrington.

The queen of charity.

The woman who smiled beside children at fundraising events.

The woman who appeared on magazine covers talking about kindness.

Had just hit one.

Victoria looked around the room.

She searched for someone to rescue her.

Someone powerful enough to change the story.

Her husband.

Her board members.

Her wealthy friends.

But for the first time in years…

Nobody moved.

“Turn it off.”

Her voice shook.

“Someone turn that screen off!”

The event manager looked terrified.

“I—I don’t have control over it.”

Victoria turned sharply.

“What do you mean you don’t have control?”

The manager swallowed.

“It’s connected to an external system.”

A murmur spread through the crowd.

External system.

Someone had planned this.

Victoria’s eyes moved toward Lily.

The little girl was still standing in the same place.

Calm.

Silent.

Watching.

“You.”

Victoria pointed at her.

“You did this.”

Daniel Cross stepped forward immediately.

“Choose your next words carefully.”

Victoria looked at him.

“She set me up.”

Daniel’s expression did not change.

“My daughter recorded what happened to her.”

“She manipulated the event.”

“No.”

His voice became colder.

“She protected herself.”

The words hit harder than shouting.

Because everyone heard the difference.

Victoria was talking about control.

Daniel was talking about survival.

Victoria laughed nervously.

“This is ridiculous.”

She looked around.

“Everyone knows me.”

“I have spent years helping this community.”

Several guests exchanged uncomfortable looks.

Because that was exactly what Victoria was counting on.

Her reputation.

Her image.

Her history.

A famous actress standing nearby whispered:

“She really expects people to forget what they saw.”

Another guest replied:

“That’s how people like her survive.”

Victoria heard them.

And something inside her broke.

Not guilt.

Fear.

“You don’t understand who you’re dealing with.”

She looked at Daniel.

“I can destroy you.”

Silence.

Daniel almost smiled.

“That sentence tells me everything I need to know.”

Victoria froze.

Because she realized she had made another mistake.

She was still acting like power belonged to her.

Daniel turned toward the crowd.

“My daughter has something to say.”

Lily looked up.

“Dad…”

“It’s okay.”

He knelt beside her.

“You don’t have to be afraid.”

The little girl nodded.

Then she faced the room.

“My name is Lily Cross.”

A strange silence followed.

Because nobody recognized the name.

And Victoria smiled slightly.

A small moment of confidence returned.

“There.”

She pointed.

“Nobody even knows who she is.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You’re right.”

Victoria smiled.

“She is nobody.”

The room went quiet.

Daniel’s eyes hardened.

“That was your mistake.”

He turned toward the guests.

“My daughter is not famous.”

“She does not appear on magazine covers.”

“She does not attend these events to impress anyone.”

“She is simply a child.”

A pause.

“And that should have been enough for you to treat her with kindness.”

Nobody spoke.

Because there was nothing to argue.

Then Daniel continued.

“But since Victoria Harrington believes people only deserve respect when they have power…”

He looked toward the screen.

“Perhaps everyone should know exactly who Lily Cross is.”

A staff member approached with a folder.

Daniel accepted it.

He opened it slowly.

Victoria watched.

Her stomach tightened.

Something about the way everyone was looking at Lily changed.

She no longer looked like an unknown child.

She looked important.

Daniel removed a document.

“This is my daughter’s birth certificate.”

Victoria frowned.

“Why would anyone care?”

Daniel looked at her.

“Because you keep asking who she is.”

He turned the paper around.

“Her mother was Emily Cross.”

A few guests gasped.

Victoria’s face changed.

Because that name meant something.

Everyone in the room knew Emily Cross.

The woman who had founded one of the largest children’s protection organizations in the country.

The woman who exposed corruption in multiple charities.

The woman who died five years earlier while protecting abused children.

Daniel continued.

“Emily spent her life protecting children who had no voice.”

He looked at Lily.

“And Lily inherited that courage.”

Victoria stepped backward.

“No.”

The word escaped her.

Because suddenly Lily was not just a child.

She was the daughter of a woman people respected.

A woman Victoria could never manipulate.

But Daniel was not finished.

He placed another document on the table.

“This is a legal agreement.”

Victoria looked confused.

“What agreement?”

“The one Emily created before she died.”

Daniel’s voice became quieter.

“She believed that powerful people would always try to silence vulnerable people.”

“So she created a system.”

“A system that automatically preserves evidence when someone threatens a child.”

Victoria looked toward Lily’s necklace.

The small device.

The tap.

The video.

“No…”

She finally understood.

The necklace was not just a camera.

It was protection.

Daniel looked at her.

“You thought you were attacking a little girl.”

“You were wrong.”

“You were attacking every child my wife spent her life protecting.”

The ballroom erupted.

Guests began whispering.

Reporters who had arrived outside rushed toward the entrance.

Phones came out.

The story was already spreading.

Victoria looked around.

Her perfect gala.

Her perfect image.

Her perfect life.

All collapsing in front of her.

But then something unexpected happened.

Lily walked toward her.

Everyone became silent.

Daniel started to move.

But Lily stopped him.

“I want to say something.”

Victoria looked down.

“You still think you won.”

The child’s words surprised her.

Victoria frowned.

“What?”

Lily touched her cheek.

The mark was still visible.

“You think because you are rich, people will always believe you.”

A pause.

“But you forgot something.”

Victoria stared.

“What?”

Lily looked directly into her eyes.

“People can only lie until the truth arrives.”

For the first time that night…

Victoria Harrington had no response.

Because a child had said in one sentence what everyone else was too afraid to say.

Then the ballroom doors opened again.

A woman entered.

Older.

Elegant.

And Victoria immediately recognized her.

Her former assistant.

The woman who had worked beside her for seven years.

The woman who had disappeared suddenly three months earlier.

Victoria’s face lost all color.

Because she knew exactly why she was here.

The woman held a file.

And she said:

“Victoria Harrington.”

Everyone turned.

“I have proof that tonight was not the first time.”

The room went silent.

Victoria’s breathing stopped.

Because the video had exposed one crime.

But this woman was about to reveal the truth about many more.

And for the first time…

Victoria realized the gala was not where her downfall began.

It was only where the world finally noticed.
