CHAPTER 9

VICTORIA’S LAST LIE

Victoria Harrington had one weapon left.

Not money.

Not influence.

Not reputation.

All of those were gone.

Her empire had cracked.

Her allies had disappeared.

Her employees had spoken.

Her secrets had become evidence.

But Victoria still had one thing nobody had taken from her.

Her ability to lie.

And she intended to use it until the very end.

The courtroom was packed.

Reporters filled every seat.

Former employees sat behind the prosecutors.

Charity donors watched from the gallery.

And at the front of the room sat the woman who had once controlled every room she entered.

Victoria Harrington.

But today…

She was not controlling anything.

She sat beside her attorneys wearing a simple black suit.

No designer jewelry.

No confident smile.

No carefully prepared image.

For the first time, the public saw her as she truly was.

A woman who had lost control.

Daniel sat on the other side of the courtroom.

Lily sat beside him.

Her hand held his tightly.

The judge entered.

Everyone stood.

Then the trial began.

The prosecutor, Elena Brooks, walked toward the jury.

“Ladies and gentlemen…”

She paused.

“This case is not about one incident.”

Victoria looked up.

“It is not only about what happened at the gala.”

A screen behind her displayed the footage.

The moment everyone had seen.

“The assault on Lily Cross was the moment the world finally noticed.”

The prosecutor looked directly at Victoria.

“But it was not the beginning.”

The screen changed.

Documents appeared.

Financial records.

Employee complaints.

Private communications.

“For years, Victoria Harrington created an image of herself as a protector of children.”

A pause.

“But behind that image was a pattern of intimidation, manipulation, and deception.”

The courtroom became silent.

Victoria leaned toward her attorney.

“Stop her.”

Her lawyer whispered:

“She is presenting evidence.”

Victoria stared.

Because for once…

Evidence was not something she controlled.

The first witness was Sarah Whitmore.

She walked to the stand.

Victoria watched her carefully.

Sarah was the first person who betrayed her.

Or at least, that was how Victoria saw it.

“Ms. Whitmore.”

The prosecutor began.

“How long did you work for Victoria Harrington?”

“Four years.”

“And during that time, what was your position?”

“Event coordinator.”

“Did you believe Victoria Harrington was a good person when you started?”

Sarah looked down.

“Yes.”

The courtroom waited.

“Why?”

“Because everyone did.”

The answer surprised people.

Sarah continued.

“She knew how to make people believe.”

The prosecutor asked:

“What changed?”

Sarah looked toward Victoria.

“Fear.”

The word echoed.

“What do you mean?”

“After a while, I realized everyone around her was afraid.”

“She didn’t have loyal employees.”

“She had frightened employees.”

Victoria stared at Sarah.

A silent message passed between them.

I made you.

Sarah answered with her eyes.

You destroyed me.

Then came Michael.

Then Anna.

Then other witnesses.

One by one…

The people Victoria thought she had erased returned.

Every story added another crack.

Every document added another piece.

Until Victoria’s entire image collapsed.

But then her lawyer stood.

“Your Honor, the defense would like to call our first witness.”

Everyone turned.

“Victoria Harrington.”

A wave of surprise moved through the courtroom.

Daniel looked concerned.

“She’s testifying?”

His attorney nodded.

“She wants control back.”

Victoria walked to the witness stand.

The woman who had manipulated hundreds of people now faced a jury.

“Ms. Harrington.”

Her attorney smiled.

“Do you believe you are guilty of the accusations against you?”

Victoria looked at the jury.

“No.”

The answer came instantly.

The courtroom reacted.

Her attorney continued.

“Explain.”

Victoria took a breath.

“I made mistakes.”

A pause.

“But I am not a monster.”

Daniel felt Lily’s hand tighten.

Victoria continued.

“I built a foundation that helped thousands of children.”

“I donated millions.”

“I created opportunities.”

She looked emotional.

“Was I strict?”

“Yes.”

“Was I demanding?”

“Yes.”

“But that does not make me abusive.”

Her attorney nodded.

“Did you intentionally harm Lily Cross?”

Victoria looked toward Lily.

For a second, something almost human appeared.

“No.”

The answer was quiet.

“I lost my temper.”

The courtroom froze.

“But I never wanted to hurt her.”

Daniel immediately understood.

The same strategy.

Not denial.

Minimization.

Make the action smaller.

Make the victim seem sensitive.

Make herself seem human.

The prosecutor stood for cross-examination.

“Ms. Harrington.”

“Yes?”

“You just said you lost your temper.”

“Yes.”

“Is that what you told yourself every time someone challenged you?”

Victoria frowned.

“I don't understand.”

The prosecutor walked closer.

“When an employee disagreed?”

“You lost your temper?”

Victoria said nothing.

“When a financial officer questioned donations?”

“You lost your temper?”

Silence.

“When Emily Cross exposed your actions?”

Victoria’s expression changed.

The room noticed.

“Objection.”

“Overruled.”

The prosecutor continued.

“You said you made mistakes.”

“Yes.”

“Was Emily Cross one of those mistakes?”

Victoria froze.

Daniel watched carefully.

This was the moment.

The secret.

The one everyone had been waiting for.

Victoria looked at the jury.

Then at Daniel.

Then at Lily.

And for a brief moment…

It looked like she might finally tell the truth.

But Victoria Harrington had spent her entire life protecting herself.

So she chose the only thing she knew.

A lie.

“Emily Cross was unstable.”

The courtroom erupted.

Daniel stood.

“What?”

Victoria continued.

“She became obsessed with destroying me.”

The prosecutor stared.

“Are you saying Emily fabricated evidence against you?”

“Yes.”

A terrible silence followed.

Because everyone knew Emily was dead.

She could not defend herself.

Victoria had chosen the easiest target.

The woman who could not answer.

But then…

A door opened.

Everyone turned.

A woman entered the courtroom.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

The entire room froze.

Daniel stood slowly.

His face lost all color.

Because he recognized her immediately.

“Emily?”

Victoria’s blood ran cold.

The woman looked directly at her.

And spoke one sentence.

“You always did make the mistake of assuming I was gone.”

Victoria stopped breathing.

Because her final lie…

Had just walked into the courtroom.

May you like
