Part 3: The Truth No One Expected
Melissa wiped tears from her face.
"Three months ago, jewelry began disappearing."
"Small amounts of cash."
"Important documents."
"I thought someone had copied our keys."
"I didn't want to accuse anyone without proof."
She looked toward her husband.
"You've been under enormous pressure at work."
"I thought if I was wrong..."
"...I'd only make things worse."
Aaron opened a small evidence folder.
"Our cameras recorded someone entering the home twice."
He placed several photographs on the coffee table.
The father stared at them.
The visitor wasn't a burglar.
It wasn't a family friend.
It was the cleaning contractor's supervisor using an unauthorized duplicate key while the house was empty.
The hidden compartment beneath the sofa had allowed Aaron to remain inside overnight without alerting anyone.
The father slowly sat down.
Everything he had imagined only moments earlier collapsed.
He looked at his daughter.
Then at Melissa.
"I'm sorry."
His voice was barely audible.
"I believed the worst before hearing the truth."
Melissa nodded sadly.
"So did I."
She knelt beside their daughter.
"I'm even more sorry to you."
The little girl buried her face against her mother's shoulder.
"I just wanted you to stop yelling."
Melissa held her tightly.
May you like
"I know."
"And I promise we'll do better."
