CHAPTER 2 — THE MAN UNDER THE SOFA

CHAPTER 2 — THE MAN UNDER THE SOFA

The silence lasted only a few seconds.

But it felt endless.

The little girl stepped backward until she reached her father's wheelchair.

She wrapped both arms around him.

"Daddy..."

"That's the man."

Her tiny voice trembled.

"He hides there every time Mommy goes away."

The stranger slowly crawled out from beneath the sofa.

He raised both hands.

"I'm sorry..."

"It isn't what you think."

The mother couldn't speak.

Her lips parted.

No words came.

The father stared at her.

His eyes were filled not with anger...

But disbelief.

"You told me I was imagining things."

She lowered her head.

"I can explain."

"No."

His voice was quiet.

"You can tell the truth."

The stranger looked toward the front door as though calculating whether he could escape.

He never got the chance.

The father calmly reached for his phone.

He pressed one button.

"I need the police."

"My wife brought someone into our home without my knowledge."

The stranger's shoulders slumped.

The mother burst into tears.

"Please don't."

But the little girl squeezed her father's hand tighter.

May you like

For the first time...

Someone had believed her.
