CHAPTER 3 — THE SECRET INSIDE THE HOUSE

Police officers arrived within minutes.

They separated everyone into different rooms.

One detective carefully inspected the hidden compartment beneath the custom-built sofa.

"It wasn't designed by the manufacturer," he said.

"This space was added later."

Inside, officers discovered more than blankets and bottled water.

There was a backpack.

A spare phone.

A change of clothes.

Receipts dated over several months.

The stranger admitted he had hidden there on multiple occasions while the father was away receiving rehabilitation treatment.

The detective turned to the mother.

"Was this planned?"

She nodded through tears.

"It started after the accident."

"I thought my marriage was over."

The father closed his eyes.

"You could have left."

"You didn't have to lie."

She cried harder.

"I didn't know how."

The little girl quietly asked the detective,

"Did I do something bad?"

He knelt beside her.

"No."

May you like

"You told the truth."

"And that helped the grown-ups understand what was happening."
