Chapter 2: The Truth Sofia Never Knew
After the police left, Daniel asked Sofia to remain.
"I owe you more than an apology."
Sofia lowered her eyes.
"You don't owe me anything, sir."
"I do."
He handed her a small envelope.
Inside was an old photograph.
Sofia stared at it in confusion.
It showed a young couple holding a newborn baby.
The woman looked strangely familiar.
"My mother..."
Daniel nodded.
"Yes."
Sofia's hands trembled.
"You knew her?"
Daniel smiled sadly.
"She saved my life twenty-six years ago."
He explained that during a devastating apartment fire, Sofia's mother, Elena, had rushed back into the burning building to rescue a young boy.
That boy was Daniel.
She never spoke publicly about what she had done.
She simply disappeared after recovering from her injuries.
"I searched for her for years."
"I only recently learned she had passed away."
Daniel looked at Sofia.
"When I saw your job application..."
"...I recognized your last name."

He had quietly hired her, hoping one day to thank the family of the woman who had given him a second chance at life.
Neither of them imagined she would first have to endure such cruelty under his own roof.
