CHAPTER 3: THE HIDDEN DETAIL

CHAPTER 3: THE HIDDEN DETAIL

“You keep calling it cheap,” I said quietly.

My voice didn’t rise.

It didn’t need to.

The room naturally leaned in.

My mother-in-law tilted her head.

“Is it not?”

I took one step forward.

Then another.

Until I was close enough for her to finally look at me instead of through me.

“No,” I said.

A pause.

“It's not.”

A faint scoff.

“Then what is it?”

I reached for the inner seam of the dress.

Just beneath the waistline.

Felt the stitching.

Soft.

Precise.

Invisible to anyone who didn’t know where to look.

And I pulled something out.

Not dramatically.

Not quickly.

Just enough for light to catch it.

A thin authentication thread.

Embedded with a microscopic seal.

The kind only visible under specific verification light.

My mother-in-law frowned.

“What is that supposed to be?”

I didn’t answer immediately.

Because the truth wasn’t something she was prepared to hear quickly.

Then I said it.

“This dress wasn’t bought.”

A pause.

“It was commissioned.”

The room shifted again.

This time, no one laughed.

Not even the people who wanted to.

My fiancé finally turned toward me fully.

For the first time, he looked uncertain.

My mother-in-law scoffed again, weaker this time.

“Commissioned by who?”

I looked at her.

And let the answer land fully.

“By the foundation you sit on.”

Silence.

Not confusion anymore.

Recognition.

Slow.

May you like

Uncomfortable.

Dangerous.
