Chapter 1: The Waitress Who Stepped In

Chapter 1: The Waitress Who Stepped In
The Grand Regency Ballroom glittered beneath crystal chandeliers.
Hundreds of guests mingled in designer gowns and tailored tuxedos while a string quartet played softly near the stage.
Leah balanced a silver tray of champagne flutes as she moved quietly between tables.
She had worked dozens of charity galas.
She had learned one rule.
Stay invisible.
Then she heard it.
"You don't belong here."
Leah turned toward the voice.
Near the center of the ballroom stood an elderly woman wearing a simple navy dress and a pair of worn leather shoes.
Her silver hair was neatly pinned back.
She looked elegant despite her modest clothing.
Standing in front of her was Victoria Harrington, a well-known socialite whose family sponsored the evening's event.
Victoria wrinkled her nose.
"This reception is invitation only."
The elderly woman smiled politely.
"I do have an invitation."
"I'm sure you do," Victoria replied sarcastically.
"Show it."
The woman searched through her small handbag.
Before she could find the envelope, Victoria snatched the bag from her hands.
Its contents spilled across the marble floor.
Reading glasses.
A handkerchief.
A small photograph.
The guests nearby watched without saying a word.
Some looked uncomfortable.
Others pretended not to notice.
Leah couldn't.
She quickly placed her tray on a nearby table and knelt beside the elderly woman.
"It's alright," she said gently.
"I'll help you."
Victoria scoffed.
"You should be serving drinks instead of defending gate-crashers."
Leah calmly picked up the woman's belongings.
"Everyone deserves respect."
Victoria folded her arms.
"You're just a waitress."
Leah met her eyes.
"And she's still a human being."
The room grew unusually quiet.
Then the ballroom doors opened.
A tall man in a black tuxedo entered.
Conversations stopped almost instantly.
It was Daniel Ashcroft.
Founder of the Ashcroft Foundation.
The man everyone had been waiting to meet.
He glanced around the room before his eyes settled on the elderly woman still kneeling beside Leah.
His expression changed immediately.
He walked straight across the ballroom.
Victoria smiled confidently.
"Mr. Ashcroft, this woman—"
He walked past her without slowing down.
Then, in front of every guest...
He knelt beside the elderly woman.
"Mother..."
"Are you alright?"
A collective gasp swept through the ballroom.
Victoria's smile disappeared.
Daniel helped his mother to her feet before turning toward Leah.

"Thank you," he said quietly.
"You were the only person who treated her with kindness."
