Chapter 2: The Truth No One Expected
The ballroom was silent.
Daniel looked around the room.
"I'd like everyone's attention."
The musicians stopped playing.
Guests turned toward the stage.
Daniel gently held his mother's hand.
"My mother spent forty years as a public school teacher."
"She taught children who couldn't afford private education."
"She sacrificed promotions so she could care for my father during his illness."
He smiled at her.
"Everything I have today exists because she believed in me long before anyone else did."
Then he looked at Victoria.
"You judged her because of her clothes."
Victoria tried to explain.
"I thought—"
Daniel interrupted.
"Exactly."
"You thought."
Without asking.
Without listening.
Without showing even the smallest kindness.
His mother squeezed his hand.
"Daniel..."
"It's alright."
He smiled softly.
"No, Mother."
"It isn't."
He turned toward the event organizers.
"I've made one change to tonight's program."
The master of ceremonies looked confused.
"What change?"
Daniel pointed toward Leah.
"I'd like our first Community Courage Award to be presented tonight."
Leah blinked.
"Me?"
May you like
"You didn't know who my mother was."
"You helped because it was the right thing to do."
