Chapter 2: The Decision

Chapter 2: The Decision

Inside the black car, Mr. Whitaker finally explained.

For six months, he had been traveling anonymously.

No assistants.

No publicity.

No private jets.

No luxury hotels.

Just ordinary streets.

Ordinary people.

He wanted to understand why the charitable foundation his company funded wasn't working.

Millions of dollars were being donated every year.

Yet fewer people were being helped.

The numbers looked good.

The reality didn't.

So he stopped reading reports and started watching life.

And what he discovered disturbed him.

People donated money.

But often ignored the human beings standing right beside them.

Organizations held fundraisers.

But rarely listened.

Executives discussed compassion in conference rooms.

Yet couldn't recognize loneliness sitting on a park bench.

Including himself.

Especially himself.

Then he met Emma.

A child who had no strategy.

No publicity campaign.

No tax benefit.

Just kindness.

Pure and simple.

When he arrived at the board meeting that evening, dozens of executives waited nervously.

The future of the company foundation depended on his decision.

Mr. Whitaker placed Emma's half sandwich on the conference table.

The room looked confused.

"What is this?" one executive asked.

May you like

He answered quietly.

"The reason we're changing everything."
