And the little girl was still waiting for an answer.
For several long seconds, Eleanor Whitmore said nothing.
The silence grew so heavy that nobody in the restaurant dared move.
Finally, Eleanor bent down and picked up the locket with trembling fingers.
"No," she whispered.
The little girl's expression hardened.
"No... I did not sell you."
The child swallowed.
"Then tell me what happened."
Eleanor closed her eyes.
For the first time in decades, she stopped fighting the memories.
Twenty years earlier, she had been nineteen years old.
Not wealthy.
Not powerful.
Not respected.
Pregnant.
Alone.
Terrified.
Her family came from old money and older expectations. A child born outside marriage would have destroyed everything they cared about.
When her daughter was born, Eleanor wanted to keep her.
She begged.
She cried.
She fought.
But her father had other plans.
The baby disappeared three days after birth.
Eleanor was told the child had been adopted by a family overseas.
The paperwork was sealed.
The records vanished.
And every attempt to find her daughter afterward was blocked.
"Who took me?" the girl asked quietly.
Eleanor's voice broke.
"My father."
Gasps echoed through the room.
