Chapter 1: The Camera Never Blinked

Chapter 1: The Camera Never Blinked

The ambulance arrived within minutes.

As paramedics treated Sophie's head wound, two police officers entered the ballroom.

Preston immediately pointed at me.

"She's trying to ruin my wedding."

One officer looked at Sophie.

Then at the blood covering my dress.

"What happened here?"

Before Preston could answer, the hotel manager stepped forward.

"Officers... our ballroom is monitored by security cameras."

The room fell silent.

Preston's confidence flickered.

"I don't think that's necessary," he said quickly.

The manager ignored him.

Within minutes, everyone gathered around a security monitor.

The footage began.

There was Sophie sitting quietly beside me.

Laughing.

Eating cake.

Never once approaching the head table.

Then Preston entered the frame.

He looked around carefully.

Reached into his jacket.

Pulled out his phone.

Walked behind Sophie's chair.

Slipped it into the pocket of her denim jacket.

Then calmly returned to his table.

Several minutes later, he stood dramatically, announced the phone was missing, and "discovered" it exactly where he had hidden it.

Gasps echoed through the room.

The recording continued.

It showed me shielding Sophie.

It showed Preston ripping the heavy oak menu from its stand.

And it showed him striking an eight-year-old child with enough force to knock her to the floor.

When the video ended, no one spoke.

Not because they didn't know what to say.

May you like

Because there was nothing left to defend.

The truth had already spoken.
