Chapter 2: The Family That Chose Silence

One officer turned to Preston.

"Sir, you're under arrest."

Preston laughed nervously.

"This is insane."

"It was an accident."

The officer shook his head.

"The video shows otherwise."

As handcuffs clicked around his wrists, Preston looked toward our parents.

"Mom."

"Dad."

"Say something."

My mother opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

My father stared at the floor.

For the first time in his life, their favorite son had no excuse strong enough to erase what everyone had seen.

As Preston was escorted through the lobby, wedding guests stepped aside in complete silence.

The celebration was over.

Not because of me.

Because lies collapse the moment they meet evidence.

Outside the ballroom, my mother finally approached.

"Evelyn..."

I stopped walking.

"I'm sorry Sophie got hurt."

I looked at her.

"You're sorry she got hurt."

"But you're not sorry you believed she deserved it."

She couldn't answer.

Because she knew I was right.

I turned away before she could say another word.

Some apologies come too late to repair what they broke.
