CHAPTER 2: MY FATHER'S LAST CONFESSION

CHAPTER 2: MY FATHER'S LAST CONFESSION

The room became unbearably quiet.

Neither Bennett nor Clara spoke.

Only Eleanor's uneven breathing broke the silence.

With trembling hands, Bennett unfolded the remaining pages inside the envelope.

The first page had revealed the impossible.

The second explained everything.

"Eleanor,"

"If you are reading this, I no longer have the courage to tell them myself."

"Years before Bennett was born, I fell in love with a woman named Anna Reed."

"She never wanted my money."

"She only wanted honesty."

Bennett felt his throat tighten.

His father had always been described as honorable.

Respected.

Devoted.

Yet the letter continued.

"When Anna became pregnant, I promised I would protect her."

"Instead, I chose my reputation."

"I married the woman my family expected me to marry."

"Anna left without asking for anything."

Clara's eyes filled with tears.

"My mother never talked about him," she whispered.

Eleanor nodded sadly.

"Because she wanted you to grow up without carrying his shame."

She reached for Clara's hand.

"When Anna became ill, she brought you to me."

"I promised her I would watch over you."

"But she made me swear never to tell you who your father was until the truth could no longer hurt more than the lie."

Bennett lowered the letter.

For the first time in years...

He realized the greatest inheritance his father had left behind was not wealth.

It was unfinished responsibility.
