PART 3 — The Thing My Father Hid

PART 3 — The Thing My Father Hid

The property was abandoned.

A low research facility hidden behind pine trees and rusted fencing.

Inside, the air still smelled like antiseptic and old paper.

And in the basement, I found it.

Boxes.

Dozens of them.

All labeled with names.

Patients. Trials. Transfers.

And one name repeated more than any other:

Whitaker Protocol

My stomach turned.

This wasn’t about infidelity anymore.

It never had been.

Footsteps echoed behind me.

Slow.

Familiar.

I turned.

Russell stood at the bottom of the stairs.

Unshaven. Tired. No tuxedo now. No audience.

Just him.

“You shouldn’t have come here,” he said quietly.

I tightened my grip on the file in my hands.

“Tell me what my father was to you.”

For a long moment, he said nothing.

Then he looked at the boxes around us.

And said the words that changed everything:

“Your father built the part of medicine people pretend doesn’t exist.”

A pause.

Then, softer:

“And I tried to bury it when he refused to stop.”

Silence filled the room like something breathing.

And suddenly I understood—

The betrayal at the airport was never the beginning.

It was the distraction.

And the real story… had just finally started.
