PART 3: THE ROOMS THAT SHOULD NOT EXIST

PART 3: THE ROOMS THAT SHOULD NOT EXIST
For a moment, no one spoke.
Even Gerald Whitmore didn’t move.
“More rooms?” Ethan repeated slowly.
Lily nodded once.
“They’re under the stairs… but farther down.”
Her fingers tightened around the plastic cup.
“Sometimes I hear other kids.”
The air in the stairwell seemed to drop ten degrees.
Ethan turned sharply toward Gerald.
“What is she talking about?”
Gerald’s face had gone completely still.
“That is impossible,” he said.
But he didn’t sound convinced anymore.
Ethan stepped past him.
“Move.”
Gerald blocked the stairwell.
“You have no right—”
Ethan finally looked at him directly.
“I don’t need permission to walk down stairs in a house I’m standing in.”
A beat.
Then Gerald stepped aside.
Slowly.
Reluctantly.
Ethan descended.
Each step deeper into the basement felt like peeling away layers of silence.
The air changed first.
Then the sound.
A faint mechanical hum… too constant to be natural.
And then—
A wall that shouldn’t have been there.
A reinforced steel door hidden behind storage shelves.
Ethan reached for the handle.
Locked.
Behind him, Gerald’s voice came quietly.
“This is a private renovation area.”
Ethan didn’t turn.
“You don’t install reinforced doors in a renovation.”
He pulled harder.
The lock held.
Lily’s small voice echoed from above the stairs:
“It opens when they think we’re asleep.”
Ethan stopped.
Slowly, he looked up at her.
“What do you mean, ‘they’?”
But Lily didn’t answer.
Instead, she pressed her ear against the wall.
And whispered:
“They’re awake now.”
From behind the steel door—
Something moved.
Not loudly.
Not violently.
Just enough to confirm one terrifying fact:
May you like
Lily was not alone in the darkness.
And she had never been meant to be.
