Chapter 1: The Broken Glass

Chapter 1: The Broken Glass

The sound of shattering crystal echoed across the ballroom.

Conversation stopped instantly.

A hundred guests turned toward the source.

On the polished marble floor, fragments of an expensive crystal glass sparkled beneath the chandeliers.

Standing beside it was Maria Santos, a hotel maid.

Her face had gone pale.

Her hands trembled.

Across from her stood Victoria Harrington, a wealthy socialite known for treating service staff like furniture.

Victoria stared at the broken glass as if a crime had been committed.

Then she laughed.

A cruel laugh.

"Do you even know what that glass costs?"

Maria lowered her eyes.

"I'm sorry, ma'am."

Victoria folded her arms.

"That glass costs more than your monthly salary."

A few guests chuckled.

Others looked away uncomfortably.

Nobody intervened.

Nobody defended Maria.

Years of working low-paying jobs had taught her a painful lesson:

Sometimes silence hurt less than arguing.

So she simply nodded.

"I'm sorry."

Victoria wasn't finished.

"People who can't afford nice things should be more careful around them."

The room filled with awkward laughter.

Maria swallowed hard.

Her eyes stung.

But she remained silent.

Then her phone rang.

A simple ringtone.

Nothing unusual.

Except the call changed everything.
