I didn’t shout.
Sound wastes energy in environments designed to erase you.
Instead, I knelt near the lower vent panel.
Old design.
Mechanical latch.
No biometric lock.
Nathan had always insisted modernization was “unnecessary expense.”
A mistake.
I pressed my fingers along the edge.
Metal burned instantly against skin.
Good.
Pain meant I was still ahead of death.
I found the loosened screw they didn’t bother replacing during last year’s maintenance audit.
