Chapter 2: The Thunder

Chapter 2: The Thunder

At first, it sounded like distant thunder.

A low rumble rolling across the highway.

Then it grew louder.

And louder.

The three men stopped laughing.

One turned toward the road.

"What is that?"

Headlights appeared in the darkness.

One pair.

Then three.

Then ten.

Then dozens.

The roar of Harley engines shook the pavement.

Motorcycles poured into the station from every direction.

Chrome glinted beneath the lights.

Leather jackets filled the lot.

The riders parked strategically.

At every exit.

Every entrance.

Every possible escape route.

The station transformed in seconds.

The three men suddenly looked very small.

The older biker calmly walked toward them.

The crowd of riders followed.

No shouting.

No threats.

Just silence.

The kind of silence that makes people reconsider every decision they've made.

One of the strangers forced a laugh.

"What's this supposed to be?"

The older biker smiled.

"A misunderstanding."

The man swallowed.

Behind him stood nearly fifty riders.

Mothers.

Veterans.

Mechanics.

Teachers.

Truck drivers.

Retired police officers.

A motorcycle club known throughout the state for helping stranded travelers and protecting people in trouble.

Nobody moved.

Nobody smiled.

The three men finally stepped away from Emily's car.

Very quickly.
