Chapter 2: The Truth Buried for Twenty-Five Years

Chapter 2: The Truth Buried for Twenty-Five Years

The wedding was suspended immediately.

Guests gathered in nervous clusters while Daniel escorted Lily and Margaret into a private room inside the estate.

No one understood what was happening.

Least of all Lily.

An hour later, an elderly man arrived.

His name was Arthur Bennett.

A retired private investigator.

Margaret had hired him twenty-five years earlier to search for her missing daughter.

Arthur carried an old leather folder.

His hands trembled as he opened it.

"I never thought I'd need these records again."

Inside were photographs.

Hospital reports.

Newspaper clippings.

Missing-person notices.

And one faded photograph.

A three-year-old girl with bright eyes and a crescent-shaped birthmark beneath her ear.

Lily stared at the picture.

Her breath caught.

The child looked exactly like the photo she kept hidden in her apartment.

The only photograph she had from before being adopted.

She slowly reached into her purse.

Removing a worn picture.

Arthur looked at it and went pale.

"It's the same child."

Lily's knees nearly gave out.

For her entire life she had believed she was abandoned.

Left behind.

Unwanted.

But the truth was far worse.

She had been lost.

Taken to a hospital after the accident.

A clerical error had separated her from her identity.

Records disappeared.

The system failed.

An adoption followed years later.

Meanwhile, Margaret spent decades searching.

Both mother and daughter had mourned each other while living in the same state.

Only a few hours apart.

For twenty-five years.

Lily looked at Margaret.

"You searched for me?"

"Every day."

Margaret's voice broke.

"Every single day."

The older woman reached into her handbag.

She removed a tiny silver bracelet.

The matching half of one Lily had worn since childhood.

The pieces fit together perfectly.

No one spoke.

No one needed to.

The truth sat between them.

Undeniable.

Margaret Reed had just discovered that the bride she publicly humiliated was actually the daughter she had spent twenty-five years trying to find.
