Chapter 2 – The Secret Behind the Museum

Chapter 2 – The Secret Behind the Museum
The grand atrium fell silent.
Even the orchestra remained frozen.
Victoria Langford stared at the head of security.
"There must be some mistake."
"You work for my family."
The security chief answered without emotion.
"Not anymore, Ms. Langford."
"The Ashbourne Museum has been owned by the Hale Foundation for the past three years."
Two officers stepped forward.
"Please come with us."
Victoria laughed nervously.
"You can't remove me from my own gala."
Claire calmly corrected her.
"It stopped being your gala the day your family sold controlling ownership."
The words struck like thunder.
Guests exchanged stunned whispers.
The Langford family had quietly sold their shares years ago?
No one had known.
Claire turned to Sophie.
"Sweetheart, are you hurt?"
Sophie shook her head, though tears still clung to her cheeks.
"She said I didn't belong here."
Claire gently wiped away her daughter's tears.
"You belong anywhere your kindness goes."
The room grew even quieter.
Then Claire looked back at Victoria.
"You asked why my daughter was here."
"Because one day..."
"...this museum will belong to her."
Victoria's confidence finally shattered.
"But...how?"
Claire smiled faintly.
"My late husband founded the Hale Foundation."
"When the Langford companies faced bankruptcy, we invested quietly."
"We never wanted recognition."
"We only wanted the museum protected."
Victoria suddenly realized the truth.

Her family's fortune had survived because of the very woman she had just humiliated.
And she had insulted the daughter of the person who had saved everything.
