Chapter 1 — The Footsteps Behind Her

Chapter 1 — The Footsteps Behind Her

“Stop it, please. You’re breaking his arm!”

Lily's scream tore through the marble foyer.

Ethan's tiny body lay on the floor, his face red from crying, one little arm trapped in Serena Montigue's grip.

The fourteen-month-old boy was gasping between sobs.

His eyes searched desperately for Lily.

She was the only person in the mansion he trusted when he was frightened.

“Ethan!”

Lily lunged forward.

Serena moved faster.

Her heel slammed into Lily's stomach.

Lily crashed onto the marble.

Pain exploded through her ribs.

For a second, she couldn't breathe.

But she didn't care.

Ethan was still crying.

His arm hung at an unnatural angle.

“Please...” Lily whispered.

She forced herself onto her hands.

“Let me take him.”

Serena stood over her.

“You're not touching him.”

“His arm—”

“I said no.”

“Serena, please!”

The nanny crawled forward.

One hand reached toward Ethan.

Then Serena grabbed her hair.

Lily screamed.

“You're going to listen to me now.”

Serena's voice was terrifyingly calm.

“You attacked Ethan.”

Lily stared at her.

“What?”

“You heard me.”

“You hurt him!”

Serena smiled.

“And when Victor comes home, that's exactly what you're going to tell him.”

Lily's heart stopped.

“You want me to say I hurt Ethan?”

“You're going to say you lost control.”

“No.”

Serena pulled her hair harder.

“You don't understand your position.”

“I do.”

“No, you don't.”

Serena leaned closer.

“You're a nanny.”

She whispered the next words.

“I'm going to be his stepmother.”

Lily's eyes filled with tears.

“You can't do this.”

“I already have.”

Then—

Footsteps.

Slow.

Heavy.

Coming from the main corridor.

Serena froze.

Lily stopped breathing.

The sound echoed against the marble walls.

One step.

Another.

Another.

Someone was walking toward them.

Serena's face changed.

“Victor?”

No one answered.

Then a man's voice filled the foyer.

“Serena.”

Her fingers released Lily's hair.

Lily turned.

Victor Blackwood stood at the entrance.

Black coat.

Rainwater on his shoulders.

His expression unreadable.

He had returned twelve hours earlier than expected.

And he had seen everything.

The Man Behind the Name

Victor Blackwood wasn't a man people challenged casually.

In Chicago, his name carried a particular kind of silence.

Businessmen lowered their voices when discussing him.

Politicians avoided being photographed beside him.

Competitors suddenly reconsidered lawsuits when his company became involved.

But inside this mansion, Victor was simply Ethan's father.

A man who worked too much.

A man who traveled too often.

A man who had trusted the wrong woman.

Now his eyes were fixed on his son.

Ethan was still on the floor.

His injured arm trembled.

Victor's face became terrifyingly still.

“What happened?”

Serena immediately rushed toward him.

“Victor, thank God.”

She pointed at Lily.

“She attacked Ethan.”

Lily's mouth fell open.

“No.”

Serena's voice cracked.

“I tried to stop her.”

Victor looked at Lily.

Then at Ethan.

Then at Serena.

“Where is his arm?”

Serena swallowed.

“I don't know.”

“You don't know?”

“She was holding him when I came in.”

Lily shook her head.

“That isn't true.”

Serena looked at Victor with tears in her eyes.

“I told her to put him down.”

“She refused.”

“Then she became violent.”

Victor said nothing.

Lily could see the uncertainty in his face.

She knew what Serena was doing.

She was telling the story first.

And whoever told the first story usually controlled the truth.

“Victor,” Lily said desperately.

His eyes moved toward her.

“She hurt him.”

Serena gasped.

“That's a lie!”

Lily pointed toward Ethan.

“I saw her grab his arm.”

“She twisted it.”

“She threw him down.”

“And when I tried to help him, she kicked me.”

Serena shook her head.

“Look at her.”

She pointed to Lily's torn uniform.

“She's pretending to be hurt.”

Victor's eyes lowered.

There was a bruise already forming across Lily's stomach.

His expression changed slightly.

But Serena continued.

“She wants you to believe her because she knows you're angry with me.”

Lily stared at Victor.

“Please.”

Her voice broke.

“Look at Ethan.”

Victor did.

The baby reached toward him.

“Da...”

It was barely a sound.

Victor's face collapsed for half a second.

Then he crossed the room.

He carefully lifted Ethan.

The baby screamed.

Victor froze.

His son's cry wasn't normal.

It was a cry of pain.

A father's instincts took over.

“Call an ambulance.”

His head snapped toward his security chief.

“Now.”

“Yes, sir.”

Serena stepped forward.

“I'll come with you.”

Victor turned.

“No.”

She stopped.

His voice was cold.

“You stay here.”

“But—”

“Stay.”

For the first time, Serena looked afraid.

The Ambulance

The paramedics arrived within minutes.

Lily followed them toward the front door.

A security guard blocked her.

“You're not going.”

Lily stared at him.

“Ethan needs me.”

“Mr. Blackwood ordered you to remain here.”

“But—”

Victor appeared behind them.

“Let her come.”

The guard immediately stepped aside.

Lily looked at Victor.

“Thank you.”

He didn't answer.

His eyes were on Ethan.

The baby was crying against his chest.

Victor carried him into the ambulance.

Lily climbed in behind them.

Serena stood beneath the mansion's enormous entrance.

Watching.

Her expression was unreadable.

As the ambulance doors closed, Lily saw Serena lift her phone.

She typed something.

Then looked directly at Lily.

And smiled.

The Hospital

The emergency room doors opened.

Doctors rushed Ethan inside.

Victor remained outside.

Lily stood beside him.

For the first time, neither spoke.

Ten minutes passed.

Then twenty.

Finally, a doctor emerged.

“Mr. Blackwood?”

Victor stepped forward.

“How is my son?”

“He has a fractured arm.”

Victor closed his eyes.

“How bad?”

“He'll recover.”

A breath escaped Victor.

But the doctor wasn't finished.

“There are also bruises on his torso.”

Victor's face hardened.

“From tonight?”

The doctor hesitated.

“Some appear older.”

Lily looked at Victor.

He turned toward her.

“What does that mean?”

The doctor answered carefully.

“It means these injuries may not have happened today.”

Victor went completely still.

“How long?”

“Some may be several weeks old.”

Lily's stomach dropped.

She remembered.

The small bruises she'd noticed on Ethan's back.

The time he'd cried when Serena tried to bathe him.

The sudden fear he'd developed whenever someone raised their voice.

She had always wondered.

Now she knew.

Someone had been hurting him before tonight.

And no one had noticed.

Or perhaps...

someone had noticed and chosen not to care.

The Question

Victor turned to Lily.

“Tell me everything.”

Lily looked at him.

“Everything?”

“From the beginning.”

She took a breath.

“Serena came into the nursery around eight.”

“What happened?”

“Ethan was playing.”

“Then?”

“She told me to leave.”

“Why?”

“She said she wanted to be alone with him.”

Lily hesitated.

Victor noticed.

“What?”

“I didn't want to leave him.”

“Why?”

“Because Ethan was scared.”

Victor frowned.

“Scared of what?”

Lily looked toward the emergency room.

“Her.”

Silence.

Victor's expression darkened.

“Explain.”

“He starts crying when she enters the room.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“I tried.”

“When?”

“Several times.”

“Who stopped you?”

Lily shook her head.

“No one.”

“I just...”

She looked down.

“I thought maybe I was imagining things.”

Victor studied her.

“What happened tonight?”

Lily told him.

Every detail.

Serena's anger.

Ethan's crying.

The arm.

The kick.

The threat.

Victor listened without interrupting.

Then he asked:

“What exactly did Serena say?”

Lily looked him in the eyes.

“She said nobody would believe a nanny.”

Victor's jaw tightened.

“She said she'd make me disappear.”

The hallway suddenly felt colder.

Victor turned away.

“Thank you.”

Lily blinked.

“You believe me?”

Victor didn't answer immediately.

Then:

“I believe something is very wrong.”

The Security Footage

Three hours later, Victor returned to the mansion.

Serena was waiting in the living room.

She stood immediately.

“Victor.”

He ignored her.

His security chief followed him into the room carrying a tablet.

“Sir.”

“Play it.”

Serena's face changed.

“Play what?”

Victor looked at her.

“The footage.”

She went pale.

“I don't understand.”

“You will.”

The screen turned on.

A timestamp appeared.

7:42 P.M.

The nursery.

Serena entered.

She looked around.

Then closed the door.

Victor watched.

Lily appeared moments later.

The two women argued.

No sound.

Then Serena pointed toward the door.

Lily shook her head.

Serena grabbed Ethan.

Victor's expression changed.

The recording continued.

Serena lifted Ethan.

The baby began crying.

Then she grabbed his arm.

Victor's fingers tightened around the tablet.

The security chief paused the video.

“Sir?”

Victor's voice was quiet.

“Continue.”

The footage resumed.

Serena twisted Ethan's arm.

Lily rushed forward.

Then Serena kicked her.

The screen froze.

Nobody spoke.

Victor looked at Serena.

She began shaking.

“Victor...”

He raised one hand.

“Don't.”

“But I can explain.”

“You can explain everything.”

Serena swallowed.

“Victor, I didn't mean to hurt him.”

“You lied.”

“I was angry.”

“You lied.”

“I was scared.”

“You lied.”

His voice remained calm.

That was what terrified her.

Serena stepped backward.

“Victor...”

He looked at the screen.

Then back at her.

“You said Lily attacked Ethan.”

Serena's lips trembled.

“I was confused.”

“You said Lily hurt you.”

“I—”

“You said you were trying to protect my son.”

Serena said nothing.

Victor walked toward her.

“You weren't protecting him.”

She backed away.

“You were hurting him.”

The Second Recording

The security chief suddenly spoke.

“Sir.”

Victor stopped.

“There is more.”

“What?”

“We found another recording.”

“From where?”

“The nursery.”

“When?”

“Three weeks ago.”

Victor's expression changed.

“Play it.”

The screen showed Serena again.

Ethan was in his crib.

He was crying.

Serena stood over him.

She looked angry.

Then she leaned down.

Her lips moved.

This time, the microphone caught the words.

“If you keep crying, your father will send me away.”

Victor's blood ran cold.

Serena continued.

“So stop.”

Ethan cried harder.

She grabbed the crib rail.

Then whispered:

“Your father chose me.”

“He won't choose you.”

Victor stared at the screen.

His breathing became slower.

Then the recording ended.

Nobody moved.

The security chief looked at him.

“Sir?”

Victor finally spoke.

“Find every recording.”

“All of them?”

“Every camera.”

“Every room.”

“Every day.”

The security chief nodded.

“And Serena?”

Victor looked toward the woman standing across the room.

“Don't let her leave the property.”

Serena's eyes widened.

“You can't keep me here.”

Victor stared at her.

“You're right.”

He paused.

“I don't need to.”

The front doors opened.

Two police officers entered.

Serena's face went white.

Victor stepped aside.

“They'll take you somewhere you can't lie your way out of.”

Lily's Choice

At the hospital, Lily sat beside Ethan.

His tiny fingers wrapped around hers.

His arm was safely secured.

He was asleep.

Victor stood at the doorway.

He watched them.

Lily looked up.

“Is she gone?”

“Yes.”

Lily nodded.

“Thank you.”

Victor stepped inside.

“I owe you an apology.”

Lily shook her head.

“You don't.”

“I should have seen it.”

“You trusted her.”

“I shouldn't have.”

Lily looked at Ethan.

“He trusts you.”

Victor followed her gaze.

“I almost lost him.”

“But you came home.”

He looked at her.

“You saved him.”

Lily smiled sadly.

“I just did my job.”

Victor shook his head.

“No.”

He looked at Ethan.

“You did what everyone else failed to do.”

Lily lowered her eyes.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Ethan stirred.

His eyes opened.

He looked toward Lily.

“Li...”

She immediately leaned closer.

“I'm here.”

Ethan smiled weakly.

Victor watched.

And something inside him shifted.

He had spent years believing money, security, and power were enough to protect his family.

Tonight had taught him otherwise.

Sometimes the person standing closest to your child wasn't the person wearing the most expensive clothes.

It was the person willing to crawl across a marble floor with a broken body just to reach him.

The Shadow Behind Serena

Victor stepped into the hallway.

His security chief was waiting.

“Sir.”

“What?”

“We searched Serena's phone.”

“And?”

“There are messages.”

“From whom?”

The security chief hesitated.

“A number we haven't identified.”

Victor's eyes narrowed.

“Show me.”

The message appeared.

Phase One failed.

Then another.

Get the nanny out of the hospital.

Victor's expression became lethal.

A third message appeared.

If Blackwood investigates, activate Phase Two.

Victor stared at the screen.

This wasn't only Serena.

Someone else had planned this.

Someone else had expected him to return.

Someone else wanted Lily gone.

He looked through the hospital window at Lily sitting beside Ethan.

His voice became cold.

“Double her security.”

“Already done.”

“And find whoever sent those messages.”

“Yes, sir.”

Victor looked back at the sleeping child.

Then at Lily.

He had thought tonight was about Serena.

He was wrong.

Serena had only been the beginning.

Someone had deliberately placed her inside his family.

Someone had been watching Ethan.

Someone had been watching Lily.

And someone had known exactly when Victor would be away.

Victor walked toward the elevator.

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

Silence.

Then a distorted voice whispered:

“You should have stayed away, Victor.”

His eyes hardened.

“Who are you?”

A quiet laugh.

“You're asking the wrong question.”

“What question should I ask?”

The voice answered:

“Who do you trust?”

The line went dead.

Victor lowered the phone.

For several seconds, he stood motionless.

Then he looked back through the glass.

Lily was still holding Ethan's hand.

And for the first time in years, Victor realized something terrifying.

The enemy wasn't outside his family.

May you like

It was already inside.

And whoever it was had just declared war.
