Chapter 12 — The Woman Behind Brooke

Chapter 12 — The Woman Behind Brooke

The wedding was over.

But the war had just begun.

By midnight, the cathedral was empty.

The flowers had been abandoned.

The candles had burned down.

The guests had gone home carrying a story they would repeat for years.

The Mercer heir had discovered his mother had lied.

The bride had walked away.

The family trust had been exposed.

And Margaret Hale had been arrested.

But Dominic knew one thing none of the guests understood.

Margaret had surrendered too easily.

A woman who had spent twenty-five years manipulating an empire did not simply walk into handcuffs because she had lost.

She had wanted to be arrested.

She had wanted everyone to believe the game was over.

Dominic stood beneath the cathedral's stone archway, watching the rain.

Noah slept against Natalie in the back seat of the car.

Emma stood beside Dominic.

“She knew you would come here.”

Dominic looked at her.

“Who?”

“Margaret.”

“Why?”

Emma lowered her voice.

“Because she wanted you to hear the truth about Gabriel.”

Dominic said nothing.

Emma continued.

“But there's something else.”

“What?”

“The woman you called Brooke Harrington isn't Brooke Harrington.”

Dominic turned.

“What did you say?”

Emma looked toward the empty cathedral.

“She hasn't been Brooke since the beginning.”

The Woman in the Photograph

Dominic drove back to the mansion.

Natalie stayed with Noah.

Emma followed him into the library.

She carried a small brown envelope.

“I found this in the servants' quarters.”

Dominic opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

A young woman stood beside Margaret Hale.

The woman looked almost exactly like Brooke.

Same eyes.

Same hair.

Same smile.

But the date on the photograph was twenty years old.

Dominic stared.

“Who is she?”

Emma pointed to the woman.

“This is Brooke Harrington's mother.”

Dominic frowned.

“I've met her.”

“No.”

Emma shook her head.

“You met the woman who claimed to be her mother.”

Dominic looked at her.

“Then who was this?”

Emma took out another photograph.

A little girl stood beside the woman.

Brooke.

Dominic's face changed.

“She was raised by Margaret.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

Dominic studied the photograph.

There was something written on the back.

THE DAUGHTER MUST NEVER KNOW WHO HER FATHER IS.

Dominic stared at the words.

“Who wrote this?”

Emma shook her head.

But Dominic already knew.

“Catherine.”

Natalie entered the library.

“What did you find?”

Dominic handed her the photograph.

She looked at it.

Then her face went pale.

“I've seen this woman.”

“Where?”

“In Mom's old journals.”

Dominic turned.

“What did they say?”

Natalie swallowed.

“She was called Evelyn.”

“Evelyn what?”

“Evelyn Hale.”

Dominic froze.

“Hale?”

Natalie nodded.

“Margaret's daughter.”

The room went silent.

Dominic looked again at the photograph.

“Then Brooke…”

“Is Margaret's granddaughter.”

A knock sounded.

Everyone turned.

Daniel stood in the doorway.

Dominic's biological grandfather.

The man who had hidden behind another man's identity for decades.

He looked at the photograph.

“You found her.”

Dominic stared.

“You knew.”

Daniel nodded.

“You knew Brooke was Margaret's granddaughter.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because Catherine told me not to.”

Dominic laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps using my mother's name as an excuse.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Because she was trying to keep you alive.”

“By hiding everything?”

“Yes.”

“That's not protection.”

Daniel's expression hardened.

“You're right.”

He stepped into the room.

“It was control.”

Dominic went silent.

Daniel looked at the photograph.

“Your mother made mistakes.”

“She made many.”

“But she wasn't the only one.”

Daniel pointed at Brooke's picture.

“Margaret began grooming her before she was ten.”

“For what?”

“To become your wife.”

Dominic felt sick.

“Before I even met her?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Margaret knew the Mercer fortune would eventually pass to you.”

Daniel paused.

“And she wanted someone she controlled standing beside you when it happened.”

Brooke's Real Name

The next morning, Dominic received a message.

No number.

No sender.

Only a location.

Harrington Estate.

Then:

COME ALONE.

Dominic stared at the message.

Natalie immediately shook her head.

“No.”

“I have to go.”

“You know it's a trap.”

“Yes.”

“Then don't.”

Dominic looked toward Noah's room.

“I can't keep running.”

Natalie understood.

“Then take someone.”

“No.”

“You're not invincible.”

“I know.”

He picked up his coat.

“But whoever sent this wants me alone.”

Emma stepped forward.

“Then don't go alone.”

Dominic looked at her.

She handed him a tiny recording device.

“Let them think you are.”

The Harrington estate had been abandoned for years.

Broken windows.

Overgrown gardens.

A locked iron gate.

Dominic entered through the side entrance.

Inside, the house smelled of dust.

Then he heard footsteps.

“Dominic.”

He turned.

Brooke stood at the end of the corridor.

No makeup.

No designer clothes.

No wedding dress.

Just a simple gray sweater.

She looked younger.

Almost vulnerable.

“You came.”

“Yes.”

She swallowed.

“I knew you would.”

“Who are you?”

She looked at him.

“My name isn't Brooke.”

Dominic waited.

“My name is Rebecca Hale.”

He stared.

“Margaret's granddaughter.”

She nodded.

“Your entire relationship with me was planned.”

“Yes.”

“Did you ever love me?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“At first, I didn't know what love was.”

“That's not an answer.”

“No.”

She looked down.

“I don't know if I ever loved you.”

Dominic's jaw tightened.

“But I loved the person I became around you.”

“What does that mean?”

“You were the first person who treated me like I was more than a weapon.”

Dominic said nothing.

Rebecca continued.

“Margaret raised me to believe you were dangerous.”

“She told me you would destroy me.”

“She told me your family would use me and abandon me.”

“So you believed her.”

“I did.”

“Until when?”

Rebecca looked at him.

“Until Noah.”

Dominic froze.

“What about Noah?”

“I watched you with him.”

She wiped away a tear.

“You weren't the monster she described.”

Rebecca reached into her bag.

She removed a small notebook.

“Margaret gave me this when I was eighteen.”

Dominic opened it.

The pages contained instructions.

Get close to Dominic.

Earn his trust.

Marry him.

Gain access to the Mercer trust.

Locate Catherine's final ledger.

Do not become emotionally attached.

Dominic's eyes stopped on the final line.

If Dominic discovers the truth, eliminate the problem.

Dominic looked up.

“Was that supposed to be me?”

Rebecca nodded.

“Yes.”

“Were you going to kill me?”

She closed her eyes.

“I don't know.”

Dominic's voice hardened.

“You don't know?”

“I was eighteen.”

“You were trained.”

“I was manipulated.”

“You still stayed.”

“Yes.”

She looked directly at him.

“And I regret it.”

A door slammed upstairs.

Dominic raised his weapon.

Rebecca whispered:

“She followed me.”

“Who?”

“Margaret.”

Dominic stared.

“She's under arrest.”

Rebecca shook her head.

“She escaped.”

Dominic's phone rang.

Detective Vance.

He answered.

“Dominic.”

“Where is Margaret?”

Silence.

Then Vance said:

“She was never in custody.”

Dominic's blood ran cold.

“What?”

“The woman we arrested wasn't Margaret.”

Dominic looked at Rebecca.

She whispered:

“She has a twin.”

Margaret's Twin

Dominic stared at Rebecca.

“Margaret has a twin?”

“Yes.”

“Name?”

“Marianne.”

Rebecca's face was pale.

“She was the one who raised me.”

Dominic understood.

The woman who had been arrested was not Margaret.

The woman who had manipulated Brooke was Marianne.

But that raised another question.

“Where is the real Margaret?”

Rebecca shook her head.

“I don't know.”

A slow clap came from the doorway.

Everyone turned.

A woman stepped into the room.

She looked almost identical to Margaret.

Older.

Elegant.

Cold.

She smiled.

“You've always been clever, Rebecca.”

Rebecca stepped backward.

“Marianne.”

The woman nodded.

“Hello, darling.”

Dominic raised his weapon.

“Where is Margaret?”

Marianne smiled.

“She's where she always wanted to be.”

“Where?”

“Beside power.”

Dominic's expression hardened.

“You're working with Gabriel.”

Marianne laughed.

“Gabriel?”

She shook her head.

“Gabriel works for someone else.”

Dominic froze.

“Who?”

Marianne's smile disappeared.

“Catherine.”

Silence.

Dominic stared.

“My mother is dead.”

“Yes.”

“She can't be controlling anything.”

Marianne stepped closer.

“That's what she wanted everyone to believe.”

Dominic's mind raced.

“No.”

Marianne looked at Rebecca.

“Tell him.”

Rebecca shook her head.

“I can't.”

“Tell him.”

Rebecca began crying.

“She knew.”

Dominic stared.

“Knew what?”

Rebecca whispered:

“Grandma Catherine knew Gabriel was your father.”

“I know.”

“No.”

Rebecca shook her head.

“You don't know everything.”

She looked at him.

“Catherine knew Gabriel would come back.”

“She knew Margaret would betray her.”

“She knew my grandmother would use me.”

“And she knew you would eventually uncover the entire network.”

Dominic's eyes narrowed.

“Then why didn't she stop it?”

Rebecca answered:

“Because she needed it to happen.”

“Why?”

“To expose everyone.”

Marianne smiled.

“Catherine built the trap.”

Dominic stared.

“She knew the Mercer empire was rotten.”

“She knew the only way to destroy it was to let every criminal believe they were winning.”

“She moved the money.”

“She created the false trust.”

“She planted the seven fragments.”

“She chose Noah as the beneficiary.”

“And she allowed Margaret to believe she had control.”

Dominic's voice dropped.

“Why?”

Marianne's answer came quietly.

“Because Catherine couldn't destroy the empire from outside.”

“She had to destroy it from inside.”

Dominic looked at Rebecca.

“Then why was Brooke part of it?”

Marianne laughed.

“Because Brooke wasn't supposed to be your wife.”

Dominic froze.

“What?”

“She was supposed to be your witness.”

“Witness to what?”

Marianne's smile vanished.

“The murder.”

Dominic's heart stopped.

“What murder?”

Marianne looked toward the upstairs hallway.

“Your mother's.”

The Last Recording

Rebecca suddenly grabbed Dominic's arm.

“We have to leave.”

“Why?”

“Because she wants you upstairs.”

Dominic looked at Marianne.

“What's upstairs?”

Marianne smiled.

“The room where Catherine died.”

Dominic froze.

“My mother died at the hospital.”

“No.”

Marianne shook her head.

“She was brought here first.”

Dominic's breathing stopped.

“That isn't possible.”

“Your family lied about the night she died.”

Rebecca whispered:

“I saw the room.”

Dominic looked at her.

“What did you see?”

“A bloodstain.”

“Where?”

“Beside the fireplace.”

Dominic's face hardened.

“Take me there.”

Rebecca shook her head.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because that's where Margaret killed Catherine.”

Dominic stared.

“And Catherine survived.”

The room was locked.

Marianne didn't stop them.

Dominic kicked the door open.

The fireplace was still there.

Old.

Cold.

But the stone floor beneath it looked different.

Dominic knelt.

He touched it.

A hollow sound.

He looked at Rebecca.

“Move.”

Together they pushed the stone aside.

A small metal compartment appeared.

Inside was a cassette.

And a letter.

Dominic recognized the handwriting immediately.

Catherine.

He opened it.

My son,

If you have reached this room, then the final lie has already collapsed.

Dominic's eyes filled with tears.

I did not die here.

But someone wanted you to believe I did.

He looked up.

Marianne was standing in the doorway.

Dominic raised his gun.

She didn't move.

Catherine's letter continued:

The woman you know as Margaret is not the woman who betrayed me.

Dominic froze.

Margaret tried to save me.

Her sister Marianne was the betrayer.

Rebecca gasped.

Dominic stared at her.

Catherine continued:

Marianne became obsessed with the Mercer fortune.

She manipulated Margaret.

She manipulated Brooke.

She manipulated Gabriel.

And she manipulated me.

Dominic's eyes widened.

The letter continued.

But I made one mistake.

I trusted her with the location of the final evidence.

And that evidence is now in your hands.

Dominic looked at the cassette.

He pressed play.

Catherine's voice filled the room.

“If you're hearing this, Marianne, then you failed.”

Marianne's expression changed.

Catherine continued.

“You always believed money was power.”

“But you were wrong.”

“Information is power.”

“And love is stronger than both.”

Dominic closed his eyes.

Catherine's voice became softer.

“I know Gabriel is your father.”

“I know what he has done.”

“And I know what you will eventually become if you allow his blood to define you.”

A pause.

“You are not your father.”

“You are not your grandfather.”

“You are not me.”

Dominic's tears fell.

“You are Dominic.”

“And that is enough.”

The recording ended.

Marianne suddenly pulled a gun.

Rebecca screamed.

Dominic moved.

A shot exploded.

The bullet struck the wall.

Dominic tackled Marianne.

They crashed onto the floor.

The gun slid away.

Marianne fought violently.

“You ruined everything!”

Dominic pinned her.

“You ruined yourself.”

Police sirens approached.

Rebecca stared at the doorway.

Detective Vance entered with armed officers.

“Marianne Hale, you're under arrest.”

Marianne laughed.

“You think this ends here?”

Vance cuffed her.

“It ends with you.”

Marianne looked at Dominic.

“No.”

She smiled.

“You still haven't found Gabriel.”

Dominic stood.

“I will.”

Marianne leaned closer.

“And when you do…”

She whispered:

“Ask him who Noah's real father is.”

Dominic froze.

Rebecca's face went white.

Vance looked confused.

Marianne smiled.

Then she was taken away.

The Woman Who Chose Her Own Name

Hours later, Rebecca stood outside the mansion.

She looked at Dominic.

“What happens to me?”

Dominic considered her.

“You helped Margaret.”

“Yes.”

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

“You were part of the plan.”

“Yes.”

“But you also saved Noah.”

She nodded.

“I should have done it sooner.”

Dominic looked toward the house.

“You have a choice now.”

“What choice?”

“You can keep being the person they created.”

“Or?”

“Become someone they can't control.”

Rebecca cried.

“What should I call myself?”

Dominic looked at her.

“Whatever you want.”

She thought for a long moment.

Then she smiled faintly.

“Rebecca.”

Dominic nodded.

“Then be Rebecca.”

She walked away.

Not as Brooke.

Not as Margaret's weapon.

Not as the bride who had never truly existed.

Just Rebecca.

For the first time in her life, she belonged to herself.

Inside the mansion, Noah was waiting.

He ran toward Dominic.

“Dad!”

Dominic caught him.

“Hey.”

“Did you find Grandma?”

Dominic hugged him tighter.

“I found the truth.”

“Is that good?”

Dominic looked toward Catherine's portrait.

“Yes.”

He smiled.

“It's finally good.”

But as he carried Noah upstairs, his phone vibrated.

One message.

A photograph.

Gabriel.

Standing beside a hospital bed.

And on that bed—

Catherine.

Alive.

Dominic stopped breathing.

The message beneath the photograph contained only one sentence:

SHE WAS NEVER DEAD.

Dominic stared at the image.

Noah looked up.

“Dad?”

Dominic couldn't answer.

Because behind the photograph was another face.

A face he recognized.

A face that made the blood drain from his body.

His own.

But older.

Much older.

The message continued:

COME FIND YOUR MOTHER.

Then another line appeared.

BEFORE I KILL HER FOR REAL.

Dominic tightened his arms around Noah.

The nightmare had never ended.

May you like

It had only changed its name.

And somewhere beyond the reach of the Mercer mansion, Catherine Mercer was waiting for her son to finally find her.
