Chapter 3 — The Signature in the Safe

Chapter 3 — The Signature in the Safe
“You should have listened when I told you to trust me, Dominic.”
Brooke's voice drifted down from the darkened staircase.
Dominic looked up.
The mansion was almost completely black.
Only the emergency lights near the hallway cast a faint glow across the marble floor.
Emma stood behind him.
Natalie had pulled Noah close.
And somewhere above them, Brooke was holding the one thing Dominic had thought was safe.
His mother's key.
“Brooke,” Dominic called.
No answer.
Then came the sound of footsteps.
Slow.
Unhurried.
She appeared at the top of the staircase wearing a black dress and holding the brass key between two fingers.
She smiled.
“You look surprised.”
Dominic stared at the key.
“Put it down.”
“You mean this?”
She held it up.
“That's not yours.”
“It belonged to Catherine.”
“And Catherine gave it to Noah.”
Brooke smiled.
“Exactly.”
Dominic's expression hardened.
“How did you get it?”
“Your house has too many secrets.”
“Answer me.”
“I took it from his backpack.”
Natalie's face changed.
“You went through my son's things?”
Brooke looked at her.
“I needed something.”
“You stole from a child.”
“No.”
Brooke's voice became colder.
“I reclaimed something that belongs to this family.”
Dominic took one step forward.
“Give me the key.”
She laughed softly.
“Still giving orders.”
“Brooke.”
“You're angry.”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
She closed her fingers around the key.
“Now you finally understand how it feels when someone takes something you believe belongs to you.”
Dominic moved toward the staircase.
Brooke stepped backward.
“Don't.”
He stopped.
“Why?”
“Because if you come closer, I'll drop it.”
His eyes narrowed.
“Drop it where?”
Brooke pointed toward the marble floor.
At first, Dominic didn't understand.
Then he saw the narrow opening beneath the railing.
A shaft leading toward the lower level.
The key would disappear into darkness.
“You wouldn't.”
“Try me.”
Natalie stepped forward.
“Brooke, what do you want?”
Brooke looked at her.
“The same thing your mother wanted.”
Natalie frowned.
“My mother?”
“Power.”
“That isn't true.”
Brooke smiled.
“You really don't know, do you?”
Dominic's eyes narrowed.
“Know what?”
Brooke looked at him.
“Your mother didn't leave you the trust because she trusted you.”
The room went silent.
“She left it because she was afraid of you.”
Dominic stared at her.
“Don't.”
“Why?”
“Because you didn't know my mother.”
“I knew enough.”
“You never met her.”
Brooke's smile faded.
“No.”
She held up the key.
“But I met the man who knew her secrets.”
Dominic's expression changed.
“Marcus.”
Brooke didn't answer.
That was answer enough.
The lights suddenly came back.
Dominic's security team rushed into the hall.
Brooke looked around.
For the first time, she appeared uncertain.
Dominic raised his hand.
“Stay back.”
The guards stopped.
Brooke smiled.
“Still playing the gentleman.”
“Give me the key.”
“No.”
“You can't leave this house with it.”
“I don't need to.”
She reached into her coat.
A small black envelope appeared.
Dominic recognized it immediately.
“What's that?”
“Your mother's final instructions.”
“You already have the letter.”
“This is different.”
She dropped the envelope onto the staircase.
It landed between them.
Dominic stared.
“Where did you get that?”
“From the safe.”
“What safe?”
Brooke smiled.
“The one you haven't found yet.”
She turned.
“Goodnight, Dominic.”
He moved.
“Stop her.”
Two guards blocked the exit.
Brooke didn't resist.
Instead, she laughed.
“You don't understand.”
Dominic walked toward her.
“Understand what?”
“The key isn't the important thing.”
She looked toward the envelope.
“The signature is.”
Then she slipped past the guards and disappeared into the darkness.
Dominic immediately grabbed the envelope.
He opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
A safe.
A large steel safe hidden behind a painting.
And beneath the photograph:
IF BROOKE EVER FINDS THIS, YOU ARE TOO LATE.
Dominic stared at his mother's handwriting.
Emma whispered:
“Where is that safe?”
Dominic looked at the photograph.
Then toward the eastern wing.
“I know.”
The safe was hidden inside the old library.
Not behind the obvious painting.
Behind a portrait of Catherine's father.
Dominic moved the frame.
A steel panel appeared.
He entered an old code.
Nothing happened.
He tried another.
Still nothing.
Natalie watched him.
“What are you doing?”
“My mother changed the combination.”
“How do you know?”
“She told me once.”
“When?”
“The day she asked me never to trust anyone who wanted to marry me.”
Natalie looked toward Emma.
“Did she mean Brooke?”
Dominic shook his head.
“No.”
“Then who?”
“I don't know.”
He stepped back.
There was a small fingerprint scanner.
Beside it was a handwritten instruction.
BLOOD BEFORE TRUST.
Dominic placed his thumb against the scanner.
Nothing.
Natalie tried.
Nothing.
Emma looked at it.
“Maybe Noah.”
Dominic froze.
“No.”
“Why not?”
“My mother wouldn't put him in danger.”
“She may not have.”
Emma pointed at the screen.
“Look.”
A message had appeared.
PRIMARY HEIR REQUIRED.
Dominic stared.
He pressed his thumb again.
The scanner rejected him.
A red light flashed.
HEIR NOT VERIFIED.
Natalie stepped closer.
“What does that mean?”
Dominic didn't answer.
He looked at the trust documents.
Then at the photograph.
Then at the key Brooke had stolen.
Suddenly, he understood.
“The trust isn't mine.”
“What?”
“It never was.”
Dominic pulled out Catherine's original agreement.
He read the succession clause again.
The property.
The investment accounts.
The voting rights.
Then he found something hidden in the margins.
A tiny symbol.
The same symbol engraved on Noah's key.
Dominic's heart began pounding.
“Natalie.”
“Yes?”
“Your son isn't just a beneficiary.”
She looked at him.
“What is he?”
Dominic whispered:
“The primary heir.”
The safe opened.
Inside was a single black box.
No money.
No jewelry.
No documents.
Only a sealed envelope.
Dominic picked it up.
His name was written on it.
DOMINIC.
He opened it.
His mother's handwriting filled the page.
My son,
If you are reading this, the woman you intend to marry has already discovered the trust.
Do not confront her yet.
You must understand one thing.
The Mercer fortune was never designed to belong to one person.
Your father wanted control.
I wanted protection.
And after his death, I changed everything.
The final trust belongs to Noah.
Not because he is my grandson.
Because he is the only person in this family who has never asked for power.
Dominic's eyes filled with emotion.
He continued reading.
There is one more thing you must know.
I did not create the trust to protect our money.
I created it to protect evidence.
Evidence of what your father did.
Evidence of what Marcus Hale did.
And evidence of the person who ordered your father's death.
Dominic stopped.
Natalie whispered:
“What does it say?”
He couldn't answer.
At the bottom of the page was one name.
BROOKE HARRINGTON.
“No.”
Dominic shook his head.
“That's impossible.”
Natalie stepped closer.
“Dominic?”
He turned the letter toward her.
She read the name.
Her face went pale.
Emma covered her mouth.
“Brooke?”
Dominic nodded.
“But why?”
Before he could answer, a sound came from behind them.
A slow clap.
They turned.
Brooke stood in the doorway.
She wasn't alone.
Marcus Hale was beside her.
And behind them stood three armed men.
Brooke smiled.
“I was wondering how long it would take.”
Dominic stepped in front of Natalie.
“You killed my father.”
Brooke's expression didn't change.
“No.”
“My mother wrote your name.”
“Your mother suspected me.”
“You stole the key.”
“Yes.”
“You tried to steal the trust.”
Brooke smiled.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because you were never supposed to find this.”
Marcus stepped forward.
“You're making this unnecessarily difficult.”
Dominic looked at him.
“You were there the night my father died.”
Marcus said nothing.
Dominic's voice became colder.
“You were there when my mother confronted you.”
Still silence.
“And you were there when Catherine changed the trust.”
Marcus smiled.
“She was very clever.”
Dominic looked at Brooke.
“Why are you working with him?”
Brooke's answer was quiet.
“Because Marcus promised me something.”
“What?”
“The Mercer empire.”
Dominic laughed.
“You think you can own it?”
“No.”
Brooke's eyes shifted toward Noah's photograph.
“I know who can.”
Dominic froze.
“What did you do?”
Brooke smiled.
“Nothing yet.”
“What does that mean?”
Marcus answered.
“The trust requires the primary heir.”
Dominic's blood went cold.
“Noah.”
“Yes.”
“You won't touch him.”
Brooke looked at him.
“Then give us the trust.”
“No.”
Marcus raised his weapon.
Dominic stepped forward.
“You shoot me, the trust remains locked.”
Marcus smiled.
“We don't need you.”
He looked at Natalie.
“We need her.”
Natalie froze.
Dominic immediately moved in front of her.
“No.”
Marcus pointed the gun.
“Then we'll take her.”
Brooke watched.
And for the first time, Dominic realized the truth.
The trust wasn't the prize.
Noah wasn't the prize.
Natalie wasn't the prize.
They were leverage.
The real prize was whatever Catherine had hidden inside the trust.
Something worth killing for.
Something worth betraying an entire family for.
Then Emma suddenly screamed.
“Dominic!”
He turned.
The black box had begun flashing.
A tiny red light blinked.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
A countdown appeared.
00:59
Dominic stared.
“What is that?”
Emma whispered:
“Your mother left a timer.”
00:52
Marcus stepped toward the box.
“Open it.”
Dominic didn't move.
00:45
Brooke's smile disappeared.
“What happens at zero?”
Dominic looked at his mother's handwriting.
One final sentence had been written beneath the signature.
He read it aloud.
“If they ever find the safe, destroy everything inside before they can take it.”
00:38
Marcus lunged toward the box.
Dominic grabbed it first.
And suddenly, the entire mansion went dark.
Again.
But this time, nobody knew who had turned off the lights.
Then a woman's voice came through the hidden speakers.
Catherine.
Clear.
Calm.
Alive in the recording.
“Dominic, if you are hearing this, listen carefully.”
The timer continued.
00:27
Catherine's voice continued.
“Brooke is not the person you should fear.”
Dominic looked at Brooke.
She looked terrified.
“The person behind Brooke has been inside this family for years.”
00:19
Marcus looked toward Brooke.
Brooke looked at him.
And for the first time, Dominic saw fear in both their eyes.
Catherine's final words echoed through the darkness.
“Trust no one.”
00:10
Dominic stared at the box.
00:09
00:08
00:07
Then the recording ended.
A door slammed somewhere beneath the mansion.
And someone whispered from the darkness:
“Catherine was right.”
00:03
00:02
00:01
The box opened.
Inside was not money.
Not a contract.
Not evidence.
It was a photograph of Dominic as a child.
Beside him stood his father.
Behind them stood Catherine.
And next to Catherine was a fourth person.
Someone Dominic recognized immediately.
His face went completely white.
Because the man standing beside his mother was supposed to have been dead for twenty-five years.
His father's brother.
May you like
And on the back of the photograph were four words:
HE NEVER REALLY LEFT.
