CHAPTER 2 — The Woman Behind the Mask

CHAPTER 2 — The Woman Behind the Mask

Claire Bennett had always believed she was the smartest person in every room.

Not because she was the loudest.

Not because she demanded attention.

Not because she threatened people.

Those methods belonged to people who needed others to know they were powerful.

Claire preferred something quieter.

A smile.

A gentle voice.

A carefully chosen sentence.

She knew the most dangerous people in the world were not the ones who shouted.

They were the ones who made everyone else believe they were harmless.

And for years, that had been Claire's greatest weapon.

Until Dominic Vale started watching.

The first sign that something had changed was breakfast.

Normally, Dominic sat at the head of the long dining table while Claire joined him beside the windows overlooking the valley.

They talked about the wedding.

The guest list.

The flowers.

The future.

A future Claire had spent months designing.

But that morning, Dominic did not look at her.

Not once.

His attention remained on the documents in front of him.

The silence was unbearable.

Claire placed her coffee cup down gently.

"Are you angry with me?"

Dominic turned a page.

"No."

The answer was calm.

Too calm.

Claire knew Dominic.

She knew his moods.

His habits.

His expressions.

Anger was easy.

Silence was not.

"Then why does it feel like I'm sitting across from a stranger?"

Dominic finally looked up.

And for the first time since she met him...

Claire felt something she had never felt before.

She felt investigated.

Not loved.

Not admired.

Not trusted.

Examined.

"You knew Mia was missing."

It was not a question.

Claire's fingers tightened around her cup.

"I thought she left."

"You thought?"

"Yes."

Dominic leaned back.

"Interesting."

A pause.

"Because Harper knew she was still inside the house."

Claire looked away.

"The child was frightened."

"No."

Dominic's voice became colder.

"The child was telling the truth."

The sentence hit harder than she expected.

Because that was the one thing Claire could not manipulate.

Harper.

The child who had ruined everything by refusing to forget.

"I was worried about her," Claire said.

Dominic stared.

"About Harper?"

"Of course."

"Then why did you tell her mother went away?"

Silence.

Only a moment.

But Dominic saw it.

The hesitation.

The calculation.

Claire recovered quickly.

"Because I didn't want her to panic."

A normal man might have accepted that answer.

A man who loved her might have wanted to believe it.

But Dominic Vale had built his empire by understanding one thing:

People lied when the truth was more expensive.

"What are you hiding, Claire?"

Her face remained calm.

But inside, something cracked.

Because that was not the question of a fiancé.

That was the question of a man hunting an enemy.

THE WOMAN BEFORE THE MASK

Ten years earlier, Claire Bennett was nobody.

Not rich.

Not powerful.

Not important.

She grew up watching other people receive opportunities she never had.

She watched girls with wealthy families enter rooms she could never access.

She watched men like Dominic Vale appear on magazine covers.

Untouchable.

Respected.

Feared.

And Claire hated one thing more than anything.

Being invisible.

Her mother used to tell her:

"Beautiful girls are noticed."

Claire learned early that beauty opened doors.

But she also learned something else.

Doors opened by beauty closed quickly.

So she needed more.

She needed power.

The first time she saw Dominic Vale, she was twenty-six.

He was walking through a hotel lobby surrounded by security.

Everyone moved away from him.

Everyone feared him.

But Claire noticed something nobody else did.

He looked lonely.

That was when she decided.

A man like Dominic did not need another person who feared him.

He needed someone who understood him.

At least...

that was what she told herself.

THE SECRET CONNECTION

That afternoon, Nathan Cross arrived at a private location outside the estate.

He was not smiling anymore.

The friendly, loyal adviser was gone.

Only the man underneath remained.

A man who knew he was losing.

Claire entered the room.

She closed the door.

"You said this would work."

Nathan looked at her.

"It was supposed to."

"Supposed to?"

Her voice sharpened.

"Mia was supposed to disappear."

Nathan's jaw tightened.

"Lower your voice."

"Why?"

Claire stepped closer.

"Are you suddenly afraid?"

Nathan stared at her.

"You don't understand who Dominic is."

A bitter laugh escaped her.

"I know exactly who he is."

"No."

Nathan shook his head.

"You knew the billionaire."

A pause.

"I know the man."

Claire looked away.

Because that was what frightened her.

Dominic was not dangerous because of his money.

He was dangerous because once he cared about someone...

he never stopped protecting them.

"We need to leave," Nathan said.

Claire turned.

"What?"

"This is over."

Her eyes narrowed.

"No."

Nathan looked surprised.

"You think Dominic won't find out?"

Claire smiled.

That same calm smile that had fooled everyone.

"He already knows."

Nathan froze.

"What?"

"I saw it this morning."

"What?"

"The way he looked at me."

She walked toward the window.

"Dominic knows something."

"Then why are you calm?"

Claire looked outside.

"Because I still have something he doesn't."

Nathan frowned.

"What?"

Claire touched her stomach.

"Control."

THE QUESTION NOBODY EXPECTED

That evening, Dominic entered Mia's room.

She was sitting by the window.

Harper was asleep beside her.

The little girl refused to sleep alone.

Dominic noticed.

"How is she?"

Mia smiled sadly.

"She's pretending to be okay."

Dominic looked at Harper.

"She's four."

"I know."

Mia lowered her voice.

"But children understand more than people think."

Silence.

Then Mia asked:

"Was it because of me?"

Dominic looked at her.

"What?"

"Why did they do this?"

He knew the answer.

But he wanted to hear what she believed.

Mia looked down.

"People like me are easy to remove."

Dominic's expression changed.

"No."

Mia looked up.

"You think because I work here, because I clean this house, because I take care of your daughter, I don't matter."

A pause.

"You were wrong."

Mia looked away.

"I don't belong in your world."

Dominic stepped closer.

"Maybe my world is the problem."

The words surprised her.

Because powerful men rarely admitted their world was broken.

"You saved Harper."

Mia whispered.

"I failed her."

"No."

Dominic's voice became firm.

"You fought for her."

For a moment, Mia looked like she wanted to believe him.

Then Harper moved.

"Mommy..."

Both adults looked down.

The little girl opened her eyes.

"Don't leave."

Mia immediately held her.

"I'm here."

Dominic watched them.

And something inside him shifted.

A feeling he had spent years avoiding.

A need to protect.

Not because of business.

Not because of reputation.

Because these two people mattered.

THE FIRST MOVE

At midnight, Dominic received a message.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

You don't know the whole story about your first wife.

Dominic stared at the screen.

His first wife.

A subject nobody mentioned.

Not even Claire.

Another message arrived.

Nathan Cross knows why she died.

For years, Dominic believed his first wife's death was an accident.

A car crash.

A tragic loss.

A wound he never reopened.

But now...

someone was telling him otherwise.

Dominic looked through the glass walls of his office.

The estate below was quiet.

His home.

His kingdom.

His prison.

Then he looked toward the hallway where Mia and Harper slept.

And he understood.

The betrayal was deeper than he thought.

Much deeper.

Claire Bennett had not simply lied about Mia.

Nathan Cross had not simply betrayed him.

Something had been hidden for years.

Something connected to the woman Dominic once loved.

He picked up his phone.

"Marcus."

"Yes, sir?"

"Open the old files."

A pause.

"Which ones?"

Dominic looked at the message again.

"The ones about my first wife."

The silence on the other end lasted several seconds.

Because Marcus understood.

Those files had been closed for ten years.

Nobody touched them.

Nobody questioned them.

Until now.

Dominic Vale had spent years believing he knew who his enemies were.

But the greatest betrayal was not waiting outside his walls.

It had been sitting beside him.

Smiling.

Pretending to love him.

And tomorrow...

the woman behind the mask would learn one thing.

Dominic Vale was not a man who forgave betrayal.

May you like

He was a man who uncovered it.
