CHAPTER 4 — The Secret Nathan Buried

CHAPTER 4 — The Secret Nathan Buried

Nathan Cross had spent seventeen years protecting one thing.

Not Dominic Vale's empire.

Not the money.

Not the power.

Not even his own life.

A secret.

Because Nathan knew something most people did not.

A man could survive losing everything.

A man could survive losing his reputation.

A man could survive losing his wealth.

But there were some truths that, once exposed, destroyed everything they touched.

And Nathan Cross had built his entire life around making sure one truth never reached Dominic.

The photograph sat on Dominic's desk all night.

Elena Vale.

Smiling.

Standing beside Nathan.

Three days before her death.

Dominic had stared at it until the sun rose.

He did not sleep.

He did not eat.

He did not move.

Because the hardest betrayals were not the ones that came from enemies.

They were the ones that forced you to question every good memory you ever had.

At 7:00 a.m., Marcus entered.

He found Dominic exactly where he had left him.

"Sir."

No response.

Marcus placed a folder on the desk.

"We found the original accident investigation."

Dominic finally looked up.

"The original?"

"Yes."

"The one before Nathan requested changes."

The room became cold.

"Open it."

Marcus did.

The first page looked ordinary.

Until they reached the last section.

UNAUTHORIZED VEHICLE MODIFICATION SUSPECTED.

Dominic read the sentence twice.

Then a third time.

"Why was this removed?"

Marcus hesitated.

"Because someone paid the investigator."

Dominic looked at him.

"Who?"

Marcus placed another document down.

A payment record.

A company.

A shell company.

But behind it...

A name.

Nathan Cross.

For seventeen years, Dominic believed Nathan was the man who stood beside him after losing Elena.

The man who held him together.

The man who helped him rebuild.

Now Dominic realized something horrifying.

The man who helped him survive the loss...

might have been the reason for it.

THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGED

Nathan remembered that night differently.

Not as an accident.

Not as a tragedy.

As a decision.

Ten years earlier.

Before Dominic became untouchable.

Before everyone feared the Vale name.

Nathan had been drowning.

His father had left him debt.

His enemies were closing in.

His future was disappearing.

Then Dominic offered him a place beside him.

A family.

A purpose.

But Nathan wanted more.

He wanted the respect Dominic had.

He wanted people to look at him the way they looked at Dominic.

And then Elena discovered something.

She discovered Nathan had been secretly moving money from one of Dominic's companies.

She confronted him.

She threatened to tell Dominic.

Nathan remembered her words.

"You don't know him as well as you think."

"You think Dominic will forgive you?"

"He won't."

She was right.

Nathan had one choice.

Admit everything.

Or remove the person standing between him and survival.

He chose wrong.

THE WOMAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

Mia sat in the library with Harper.

The little girl was coloring.

A family.

Three figures.

A house.

A sun.

Dominic walked in.

He stopped when he saw the drawing.

"You drew that?"

Harper nodded.

"That's Mommy."

She pointed.

"That's me."

Then she pointed at the third figure.

"And that's you."

Dominic was silent.

"Why am I there?"

Harper looked confused.

"Because you saved Mommy."

A simple answer.

But it affected him more than any business deal ever had.

Mia watched him.

"You care about her."

Dominic looked away.

"I care about both of you."

The honesty surprised him.

Because Dominic Vale was not a man who admitted attachment.

Mia smiled faintly.

"That scares you."

He looked at her.

"What?"

"Needing people."

Silence.

Because she was right.

Dominic had spent years building walls.

Mia and Harper were slowly walking through them.

THE CONFRONTATION

Nathan came willingly.

That surprised everyone.

Marcus expected resistance.

Dominic expected lies.

Instead, Nathan entered the office quietly.

Like a man walking toward his own execution.

"You know."

It was not a question.

Dominic placed the photograph on the desk.

Nathan looked at it.

And closed his eyes.

"How long?"

Nathan said nothing.

"How long did you know?"

A long silence.

Then:

"Since the beginning."

Dominic's face became unreadable.

"The accident."

Nathan swallowed.

"Yes."

The word was barely audible.

But it destroyed seventeen years.

"You knew Elena was afraid."

"Yes."

"You knew someone damaged the car."

Nathan looked down.

"Yes."

Dominic stood.

The room felt smaller.

"You watched me bury my wife."

Nathan closed his eyes.

"I know."

"You stood beside me."

"I know."

"You called me your brother."

A tear appeared in Nathan's eyes.

"I meant it."

Dominic laughed once.

A cold, empty sound.

"Don't."

Nathan looked up.

"I did love you like a brother."

Dominic stared at him.

"Then why?"

That question broke Nathan.

Because he had spent ten years preparing for anger.

He had not prepared for disappointment.

"Because I was weak."

Silence.

"I thought if I had more power, I would finally matter."

Dominic shook his head.

"You already mattered."

Nathan looked away.

And that was the tragedy.

He had destroyed the one thing he wanted to keep.

THE FINAL PIECE

Before Dominic could continue, Marcus entered quickly.

"Sir."

Something in his expression changed the room.

"We found Claire's connection."

Dominic turned.

"What connection?"

Marcus placed a file down.

"Claire wasn't working alone."

Inside were photographs.

Claire.

Nathan.

And another person.

A man Dominic recognized.

His expression changed.

"Impossible."

Marcus looked at him.

"Sir?"

Dominic picked up the photograph.

The man standing beside Claire was someone he had not seen in years.

Someone believed dead.

Someone connected to his family's oldest enemy.

And beneath the photograph was one sentence:

The person who ordered Elena's death is still alive.

Dominic slowly lowered the page.

Because suddenly the truth was larger than Nathan.

Larger than Claire.

Larger than the betrayal inside his home.

Someone had been moving pieces for ten years.

And Mia Carter was not the only person who had been trapped.

Dominic looked toward the window.

His empire had always been built on knowing his enemies.

But now he understood something.

The most dangerous enemy was not the one who attacked him.

It was the one who waited.

And somewhere in the city...

the person who destroyed Elena Vale was watching.

Waiting.

Smiling.

Because they believed Dominic Vale would never find them.

May you like

They were wrong.
