Chapter 4: A Different Legacy

Chapter 4: A Different Legacy
Three months later...
Vincent gathered every captain in his organization.
No one spoke as he entered.
"The business ends today," he announced.
The room erupted.
"You can't shut everything down!"
"Our enemies will destroy us!"
Vincent raised one hand.
"They already destroyed enough."
He signed away illegal holdings.
Turned over evidence that dismantled rival operations.
Closed every route that had built his fortune.
People called him crazy.
Some called him weak.
He ignored them all.
That evening he drove to a small beach where Nora and Lily were building sandcastles.
Lily spotted him first.
"Daddy!"
She ran into his arms before grabbing Nora's hand.
"Come on!"
"We're making a family castle."
Vincent looked at Nora.
She smiled softly.
"You don't have to earn her love anymore."
"You already have it."
He took Nora's hand.
For the first time in years...
The weight on his shoulders felt lighter.
As the sun disappeared beneath the horizon, Lily laughed between them, holding both their hands as the waves rolled onto the shore.
Vincent realized that power had never protected his family.
Love had.
And love had arrived wearing a waitress's apron, carrying a tray of coffee, with the courage to stand between a frightened little girl and a bullet.
Sometimes the family that saves you isn't the one you're born into.
May you like
It's the one that chooses to stand beside you when the world falls apart.
